Professor of Social Anthropology

Lund University, Faculty of Social Sciences , The Department of Sociology

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University is one of the leading education and research institutions in Sweden and operates both in Lund and Helsingborg.

The Department of Sociology is home to Pedagogics, Social Anthropology and Sociology, with significant teaching commitments in all three disciplines. Research in the department span from empirical studies of contemporary social issues to critical theory, and the development of theory and methods.
The Department of Sociology is one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Social Sciences, with about 70 employees and over 740 full-time students, of which approximately 100 full-time students study Social Anthropology. Teaching at the department encompasses all levels of teaching, including Bachelor, Master and Graduate studies.

There is advanced cooperation between social anthropology and sociology. There are certain joint modules or course components, and teaching staff within the two subjects teach, supervise and assess in both the department’s own Master’s programmes and in several of the faculty’s joint Master’s programmes and courses. In addition to subject-specific second cycle programmes, the department also conducts a Master’s programme in Cultural Criminology taught by lecturers from both subjects. There is also a certain degree of cooperation between the subjects in the department’s new first cycle programmes in Social Anthropology and Sociology.

Subject description

The Division of Social Anthropology is currently a relatively small research environment, but it is characterised by diversity, curiosity and critical thinking. Current research spans a broad field including refugee existence and integration, human rights, nationalism, social movements, policy, criminal and political violence, sex work, social stigmatisation as well as museology and visual anthropology. With this vacancy announcement, we want to further strengthen the division and ensure renewal and the development of the subject.

Principal duties

The position also includes first, second and third cycle teaching and supervision as well as leading, organising, developing and planning the content of third cycle studies and first and second cycle programmes. The position also encompasses administration, subject responsibility and, on occasion, participating in various drafting bodies concerning research and third cycle studies, and management assignments at departmental and other levels within Lund University. We expect that the incoming professor will actively participate in the daily work of the department.

Teaching will be conducted in Swedish and English. If the successful applicant has a first language other than Swedish (Danish or Norwegian), she or he will be expected to have acquired sufficient knowledge of the Swedish language (spoken and written) within two years, to be able to teach in Swedish and actively participate in administrative and other relevant activities conducted in Swedish.
