Job Details

Applications are invited for a highly motivated and ambitious individual to join the Northern Hub for Veterans and Military Families’ Research, within the Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Health, Northumbria University.

The successful applicant will be appointed at a Senior Research Assistant (Grade 5) and will work alongside an established research team in the Northern hub of Veterans and Military Families research. Under guidance of the principal investigator (Dr Gemma Wilson), the successful candidate will carry out tasks related to: ethics, participant recruitment, mixed-method data collection, mixed-method data analysis, and project dissemination.

This position will be working over two externally funded research projects; one funded by the Forces in Mind Trust, and one funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust. Both projects aim to explore social isolation and loneliness of War Widows. The issues of loneliness and social isolation have recently been a focus within the Armed Forces Community, and there are specific factors related to being part of the Armed Forces Community that can increase vulnerability to, or impact experiences of, social isolation and loneliness – such as social and geographical mobility, military service, and life transitions such as widowhood. Research by our team demonstrates that widowhood is a complex phenomenon which can be compounded by the loss of relationships, financial hardship and a lack of access to social support which may be especially relevant to War Widows as they experience the loss of their (Forces) community in addition to the loss of their spouse. Despite widowhood being recognised as a key transition impacting loneliness and social isolation, there is currently a lack of research focusing specifically on widow(er)s whose partner’s death is attributable to service life.

The role is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in health psychology, public health, and/or military-related studies. Expertise in mixed methods research is also required.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated researcher with an excellent work ethic who is able to learn new techniques rapidly.  The applicant should have a PhD degree in a relevant subject area. They will have previous experience of delivering a research project and presenting findings to colleagues and collaborators. They must be able to work effectively and work to deadlines.

Please note: This position is full-time for 12 months, and then 0.6 (3 days per week) for a further 12 months.
