The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has been named the top young higher education institution in Scotland in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings (June 2020). As one of three Centres of Excellence for midwifery education in Scotland, UWS also remains the largest provider of midwifery education.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Lecturer /Reader in Midwifery to join the Division of Midwifery & Specialist Nursing within the School of Health & Life Sciences. The successful candidate will lead the dynamic and progressive team to develop our growing education portfolio in midwifery, neonatal and maternity care, and further engage in related research activity and enterprise for income generation.

Our current midwifery education programmes include BSc Midwifery and MSc Midwifery with Registration and these remain in line with NMC guidance, NMC updated standards and the Scottish Government Initiatives for midwifery practice.  Other programmes include the Graduate Certificate in Neonatal Nursing and Certificate in HE for Maternity Care Assistants.  The successful candidate will require to be on the NMC register as a registered midwife and could be considered for the role as Lead Midwife for Education in the School.

Experience of effective leadership is integral to the role along with a track record in the development and delivery of midwifery education programmes. Evidence of experience is required in the integration of contemporary teaching, learning and assessment methods in everyday teaching practices and embedding research in education. In this leadership role, undertaking research, development and/ or scholarship to enhance teaching will be expected along with engagement in wider academic activities including research, consultancy and CPD.

The School of Health and Life Sciences is a multidisciplinary School where teaching and research are at the heart of all activities. A diverse range of programmes are delivered at our Ayr, Dumfries, Lanarkshire, London and Paisley campuses to a combined total of around 6400 students from over 60 countries.

Midwifery education is based in the new ‘state of the art’ Lanarkshire campus which creates a truly innovative, dynamic and collaborative environment. The campus hosts inspiring, and flexible learning and teaching spaces packed with rich technology to offer staff and students access to some of the modern university facilities in the UK.  The midwifery team has well established links with a range of clinical areas providing practice placement experiences for our students. The successful candidate will be based on the Lanarkshire campus and report into the Division of Midwifery & Specialist Nursing.

The University of the West of Scotland is committed to providing an inclusive working environment. UWS has an Athena SWAN bronze award, is a Disability Confident employer and welcomes other under-represented groups, as such we particularly encourage applications to support our diversity agenda.
