  • 12 month, fixed-term contract with a possibility of extension up to December 2022. Base salary: $96K -$104K (Level A,6+) plus annual leave loading and a generous employer’s contribution to superannuation

About the opportunity

The vision of the research group is to develop a broad and highly innovative program of research using state-of-the-art and internationally unique cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) methodologies in heart disease. This is done to better understand the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, improve diagnoses, test new therapies, and ultimately improve health.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within the CMR Group at the University of Sydney, located at the Kolling Institute, Royal North Shore Hospital, is a research-only academic position performing clinical research. The main aim of the research is to better understand the pathophysiology andimprove diagnosis and treatment of heart disease using cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging.

The successful applicant is expected to make independent or original contributions to the research effort within their field of expertise and to the organisation unit, or to the interdisciplinary area of which they is a part of. The position requires a highly motivated, energetic and conscientious person, with postgraduate level qualifications and an excellent track record in research.

About you

The successful applicant must, prior to commencement of the positionduring 2020, have completed medical school and completed a PhD, or have equivalent experience with multiple first author original research publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The applicant must have excellent written and verbalEnglish communication skills.

It is strongly desired that the successful applicant has:

  • clinical and/or research experience, including technical development in cardiac diagnostic methods, including magnetic resonance imaging, echocardiography, computed tomography, nuclear imaging, electrocardiography, and/or cardiopulmonary exercise testing
  • clinical and/or research experience in the areas of heart failure, ischemic heart disease, cardiomyopathies, diastolic dysfunction, and/or coronary microvascular dysfunction
  • clinical and/or research experience in image visualisation and post-processing methods, including methods for quantification of anatomical and/or physiological measures of relevance for cardiovascular diagnostic assessment

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Level A) who will:

  • work under the supervision of academic staff at Level B or above, with an increasing degree of autonomy as the research academic staff member gains skills and experience
  • typically conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision, either independently, or as a member of a team
  • at times, undertake limited teaching, supervise at undergraduate levels, and/or publish the results of the research conducted as sole author or in collaboration
  • undertake administration primarily relating to staff member’s activities at the University
  • hold a relevant higher education degree

We develop and use state-of-the-art cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging to better diagnose and evaluate treatment in heart disease, and to understand the basic physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms of cardiac function in health and disease.

Our research is a part of a collaborative global network of researchers and clinicians with an aim to provide accurate diagnostic methods, earlier detection, earlier treatment, and decreased morbidity and mortality from heart disease.
