We are looking for an exemplary manager to play a pivotal role in delivering excellence and equity in rural health through education, research and engagement. Supporting and working in close partnership with the Head of the Department, Professor Julian Wright, the successful candidate will lead a great culture and positive work environment for all professional staff located across our campuses in Victoria.
Reporting to the Manager of the Melbourne Medical School, the successful candidate will form part of a network of experienced managers leading operations across the ten departments and precincts of the Melbourne Medical School. With a passion for empowering teams to thrive in a healthy and safe work culture along with outstanding capabilities in all areas of operational, financial, and governance administration, you will bring a deep commitment to delivering positive outcomes in health to the rural communities we serve.
You will possess:
- Extensive relevant management experience in large and complex organisations, preferably within a higher education, research or health-related organisation.
- Excellent interpersonal skills including a high level of empathy, equanimity and emotional intelligence. Reflective listener committed to self-leadership.
- Exemplary team leadership skills. Demonstrated track record of enabling great staff performance; creating autonomy across diverse teams where staff are empowered and trusted to do their work.
- Strong financial acumen and excellent communication skills
- Willing to live within reasonable driving distance of one of our rural campus locations and/or spend significant time with our executive and professional services teams primarily based in Shepparton
The Department of Rural Health was established on 1 February 1999 and its largest campus is located adjacent to Goulburn Valley Health at Shepparton. It has other major campuses at Ballarat, working closely with Ballarat Health Services, and at Wangaratta, with Northeast Health Wangaratta. It currently incorporates the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing designated ‘University Department of Rural Health’ (1998), the ‘Rural Clinical School’ (2001) Goulburn Valley Regional Training Hub (2017) and Centre of Excellence in Rural Sexual health (2009)
The Department enables undergraduate health professionals to undertake a significant period of their training in rural environments and provides rural communities with greater access to teaching and research facilities and greater clinical support.

The Department of Rural Health at the University of Melbourne has campuses in Shepparton, Ballarat and Wangaratta. The successful candidate can choose to live within reasonable driving distance of any of these campuses.
