UCB is seeking a dynamic leader with a proven track record of delivery to take up the new role of Deputy Dean (Teaching, Learning and Digital) joining a team within the newly created School of Health, Sport and Food. As Deputy Dean (Teaching, Learning and Digital), you will take lead responsibility for the school’s implementation of the teaching and learning strategy, ensuring that the full curriculum is engaging and industry-focused, incorporating online learning and digital technology as well as more traditional teaching methods. You will lead on embedding outstanding teaching practice across the Further and Higher Education curriculum, ensuring that all students achieve their potential and you will have specific leadership responsibility for working with colleagues across UCB to reduce inequalities in outcomes for students from diverse backgrounds.

You will be part of a new leadership team comprising an Executive Dean and two further Deputy Deans for 1) Strategy, Recruitment and Innovation and 2) Quality and Student Experience leading a large school bringing together departments containing Health and Nutrition, Education, Social Care and Community; Sport, Culinary Arts and Bakery, covering a range of disciplines in further and higher education.

This is a critical role within UCB and requires an inspirational individual able to collaborate with colleagues across the institution, including the recently appointed Deputy Dean (Teaching, Learning and Digital) in the new School of Business, Tourism and Creative Industries.

A key aspect of the role will be the development and integration of digital solutions to improve and enrich the teaching, learning and assessment of all students, helping to raise levels of attainment and close identified attainment gaps. In addition, you will contribute to improvements of the wider student experience through the skilful deployment of digital technology to ensure our students develop appropriate general and specialist digital skills that are vital for learning, life and work in an increasingly digitised world.

University College Birmingham provides a strong focus on student preparation for the job market through vocational education. We offer a diverse mix of further and higher education courses, including apprenticeships, ranging from level 2 to 7 (our HE/FE split is 70/30) This is underpinned by our established accreditation agreement with the University of Birmingham, who validate some of our Higher Education provision.

We are aspirational, high-performing and teaching focussed with a clear vision aligned to continuous improvement, innovation, creativity, and high-quality student experience. Our financial performance is very strong and our investment in our estate has been realized by the opening of our new teaching campus in February 2020; the latest phase of a £130 million investment into the University since 2014.

You will be a credible senior leader with experience gained in the Further and/or Higher Education sectors, as well as a particular academic discipline. You will have the ability to translate the University vision into outstanding teaching across all of the disciplines within your portfolio.

We want to hear from candidates with strong curriculum leadership skills at a senior level, leading diverse teams to successful outcomes, strong collaborative working skills, the ability to drive and interpret strategy and lead by personal and professional example.

In return, we can offer a fantastic working environment in an institution with big ambitions. Our small size means that you can have a significant influence from day one. You’ll also get all of the great benefits of being a member of staff at UCB, including a competitive salary, generous annual leave, private health, generous contributory pension scheme and access to our fantastic campus facilities in the heart of Birmingham.

How do I Apply?

You will need to submit a CV (maximum 4 sides) and a cover letter (maximum 2 sides) setting out specifically how you meet the requirements of the role. You should use font size 11pt.
