Position Focus:

Due to COVID-19 all interviews will be conducted virtually, start date will be flexible, and this individual will be expected to work remotely for a period of time. 

The Office of Institutional Research (OIR) provides information to support university decision-making through a variety of analytic activities, data-gathering tasks, and research projects. This position will serve as an analyst, with a specialization in managing the flow and storage of data resources used by OIR and partners. The analyst will work with a variety of data types, analyses, and audiences, with a particular focus on strengthening the methods and structures within OIR that facilitate institutional research and reporting.

The OIR Data Resource Analyst will build, manage and optimize data pipelines for key data and analytics consumers such as data analysts, data scientists, and research scientists. They will play a pivotal role in operationalizing data capture across a range of scales. The incumbent will lead the gathering and analysis of official University data from distributed offices across the school and units at Yale. This requires the highest level of attention to detail, along with an absolute commitment to data quality and integrity. Data sources will be a mix of transactional data systems, independent data repositories located within individual units, and small amounts of information OIR receives through manual transmission from a variety of University colleagues.

This individual will apply their strong analytical capabilities, creativity and problem solving skills in close collaboration with team members in OIR and Strategic Analysis, colleagues and stakeholders within the University, and external audiences such as Federal and other agencies. In addition, the incumbent will field analytical requests from leaders across the University, independently clarifying their requests based on an understanding of University issues and data sources. As part of this effort the incumbent will design and maintain the office website. The incumbent will remain informed about major University policies and initiatives in order to most effectively work with constituents across the campus on priority issues. The position reports to the Director of the Office of Institutional Research.

Essential Duties

  1. Creates a relational database from existing study data currently stored in multiple data sources. Designs comprehensive and relational databases with advance knowledge of relevant applications impacting on the data analyses and reporting.
  2. Develops and documents operational procedures for the collection, editing, verification and management of study data. Documents all study data files, data structure and relationships, variable definitions and data codes. Writes detailed specifications for analysis files and performs consistency checks.
  3. Develops and implements relevant statistical programs to incorporate data from multiple studies/projects.
  4. Organizes and creates documents and tables related to datasets; communicates with data sources about data accuracy and data dictionary.
  5. Evaluates and analyzes data using accepted statistical techniques and statistical analysis software. Performs descriptive and multivariate statistical analyses of data, using computer software.
  6. Uses advanced statistical knowledge to provide support in managing and analyzing data.
  7. Designs and implements quality control measures to ensure accurate collection and processing of data. Ensures the integrity of databases used in analyses through development of essential data cleaning and checks, and data back-ups.
  8. Responsible for the documentation and transmission of study data. Ensures that data are collected and completed in a timely manner at each site location.
  9. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree in statistics, computer science or a related field and two years of experience in data management and analysis or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with data collection and in coordinating efforts of multiple groups.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Proven ability to create large, complex data sets from disparate sources while managing data quality – both for statistical analysis and data management.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Statistical analysis skills including multiple regression. Demonstrated ability with statistical software, e.g. SAS, R, SPSS, STATA, or MATLAB.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Expertise with popular database programming languages for relational and non-relational databases. Experience working with heterogeneous datasets to build, manage and integrate data pipelines. Expertise with scripting using languages such as R, Python, Java, C++, Scala, SQL, others.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to develop, recommend and execute solutions to complex problems often under time constraints, handle multiple tasks/projects at the same time and complete projects successfully and on time. Ability to adapt to changes in work demands, priorities and procedures exercising good judgment, seeking alternatives and creative solutions.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Excellent collaborative interpersonal communication skills with ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, interacting with a diverse array of faculty, students and staff. Ability to exercises sound judgment, tact, and discretion. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Experience executing queries against relational databases. Experience or training in survey design. Experience with Workday, Hyperion (Brioquery) and Tableau. Skilled with survey data a plus.
