Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Engineer Fellow within UCD School of Medicine

A Research Fellow is required for a project involving the development of a novel technology for surgical endoscopy. This is a unique opportunity to become involved in a high end "technology development" project with significant clinical and commercial potential.

This position is hosted by the School of Surgery and Surgical Sciences, specifically the UCD Centre for Precision Surgery (https://www.ucd.ie/medicine/ourresearch/researchcentres/ucdcentreforprecisionsurgery/) in collaboration with the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (http://www.ucd.ie/eacollege/mme/) which is part of the College of Engineering and Architecture in University College Dublin.

The purpose of the role is to deliver a specific research project. The role allows the Research Fellow the professional development opportunity to demonstrate the capacity for independent and self-directed research and scholarship and commercial interaction and advancement. The role allows the Fellow to assemble a portfolio of independent achievement and render themselves competitive for tenured academic positions or senior scientific roles in industry.

The research project proposes to develop to the point of first-in-human use and CE mark readiness a microfibreoptic device capable of deployment endoscopically with external interface to an optimised graphical display and a multispectral energy system. In addition, a mechanical access device for gas-sealed insertion into a patient will be developed to clinical use from an existing prototype with protected intellectual property. The project is funded by the Disruptive Technologies and Innovation Fund and is both a prestigious and strategic priority for the School, College and University.

In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:

  • Monitor and critically review the "state of the art" in respect of the core system technologies in order to identify opportunities for exploitation.
  • Identify experts, technology and service providers of strategic interest to the project. Develop relationships and collaborations accordingly.
  • Develop excellent design solutions. Build, rigorously test and demonstrate prototypes.
  • Codify all designs (hardware and software) using standard computer software and databases,
  • Seek opportunities for the development of intellectual property. Follow invention disclosure procedures up to full patent application as applicable.
  • Promote the project, the research, the UCD team and funding agencies in line with the commercialisation strategy for the project and subject to IP protection constraints.
  • Ensure that all prior and generated knowledge is codified, recorded systematically in structured and internally shared databases.
  • Ensure effective communication with all stake holders and alignment of objectives etc. This includes by presentations, research reports, project updates and publications.

Fixed salary: €58,638 per annum
