The Department delivers research-led education across a range of areas to approximately 600 students.

The Department of Sociology at City, University of London seeks to recruit a Research Assistant to work alongside Dr Dan Mercea, Co-Principal Investigator on the project “ProDem - Protests and Democracy: How Movement Parties, Social Movements, and Active Citizens are Reshaping Europe”. The project aims to comparatively assess the medium and long-term effects of the triple interaction between citizens, social movements, and movement parties in 6 European countries. The part time position, available for three years, is funded through an award by the Volkswagen Stiftung. 

Responsibilities

The position is available part-time; initially 0.2 FTE for the first year, reducing to 0.1 FTE for years 2 & 3. The post is funded for 36 months, specific hours can be negotiated. For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Dan Mercea Dan.Mercea.1@city.ac.uk

The key responsibilities of the role will involve assisting the principal investigator with preparing items for a cross-national survey. This work will include contributions to a literature review and online database queries for protest event information.

The role will also involve assisting the research team in the communication of the main research findings to non-academic third-parties, assisting with publishing materials online, and the organization of public events.

Person Specification

The successful candidate has been or is about to be awarded a Master’s degree in political science, sociology, communication studies or a related social science discipline, will be joining an international research team, to contribute to assist with different aspects of the research project including data management—collection, cleaning, analysis and storage—literature reviews and the public communication of research findings. The empirical data will comprise survey, interview, media and social media data.
