About the opportunity 

We are currently seeking an experienced Instrumentation Technical officer - Wind Tunnel, Fluids and Combustion to coordinate the daily operation of the Laboratory facilities, carry out technical and electronic maintenance and development of laboratory equipment and instrumentation. The successful applicant will develop essential wind tunnel, fluids and combustion teaching support material and provide development support to research projects, particularly in electronics support and instrumentation. You will undertake analysis guided by established procedures/standards for preparing and carrying out experiments related to the research work being undertaken by the work area. This position will collect and record qualitative data in preparation for analysis by research staff. You will also ensure that the relevant Work, Health and Safety standards are met in the work area and are aligned to the University’s WHS policy.

  • a tertiary qualification or higher degree qualification in engineering, instrumentation or related disciplines and/or is certified to work in a laboratory together with some work experience and willingness to undertake further studies to better develop their skills in laboratory techniques/methods
  • strong experience in designing, implementing and supporting wind tunnels, fluids and combustion lab equipment, including instrumentation, PIV, electronic, software and mechanical design skills
  • good verbal and written communication skills, with proven ability to apply theoretical knowledge and techniques to meet the key accountabilities
  • experience with developing teaching materials, research projects, experimental design and preparing ethics submissionsand grant applications
  • demonstrated experience in research methodology skills with the ability to support student projects and prepare scientificpapers for publication
  • intermediate to advance computer skills, including managing research data appropriately in databases and/or statisticalanalysis programs, and extracting relevant reporting and/or analysis
  • sound working knowledge and acute awareness of safety regulations and operating procedures within the laboratoryenvironment including experience in working with hazardous substances with well-rounded experience in implementingsafety procedures relevant to the laboratory
