Research Assistant, RMIT and CSIRO Mineral Resources
- Full-time, 3-year fixed-term contract; based at RMIT City campus but will be required to work and/or be based at CSIRO Mineral Resources, Clayton and other campuses of the University
- Access to state-of-the-art mineral characterization/processing equipment at CSIRO Mineral Resources, Environmental & Microbiology facilities in RMIT University, the Australian Synchrotron and CSIRO Land & Water
- Utilise and further develop your expertise & knowledge in electrochemistry and materials characterization using SEM, XRD, synchrotron-based techniques like XAS, and various other spectroscopic techniques
- Report directly to the Professor Miao Chen, Applied Chemistry and Environmental Science at RMIT
- Remuneration at Academic Level A ($68,983 - $93,569) + 17% superannuation

The School of Science provides over 45 bachelor and postgraduate programs, and undertakes world class research across the disciplines of Biosciences and Food Technology, Chemistry and Environmental Science, Physics, Mathematical Sciences, Geospatial Sciences and Computer Science (Information Technology and Software Engineering).

About You and the Role
In this position, you will:
- Conduct high impact research and development activities with multidisciplinary researchers leading to high quality publications, conference presentations and scientific knowledge to improve the operational and environmental management of sulfidic ores, soils and wastes
- Contribute to the discovery and validation of how sulfide minerals chemical reaction mechanisms could underpin potential advances in green mining and environmental management practices
- Use advanced Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy and other spectroscopy techniques to examine in situ microscale changes in chemical species at the surface layers of sulfide minerals and soils under different operational and environmental conditions
You will have:
- Solid theoretical and in-depth working knowledge of electrochemical science, including its practice in the research environment and its applications, together with an understanding of the material requirements for electrochemical studies and applications
- Proven experience with scanning electrochemical microscopy research and a sound working knowledge of solution chemistry/surface chemistry for electrochemical applications
- Ability in operating laboratory equipment for materials characterization such as SEM, XRD, synchrotron-based measurement techniques like XAS, and other spectroscopic techniques
- An excellent track record in research and scientific investigations and in adapting, designing and testing alternative solutions
- Capability to analyse, communicate and present research findings, concepts and knowledge with sound problem-solving and analytical skills in dealing with ambiguity
- An ability to manage and plan your time effectively and efficiently to conduct innovative research independently and collaboratively, and to share research findings across multi-disciplinary teams and with industry and government
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a passion and commitment to build strong relationships across all levels of professional staff within the organization
PhD qualified in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related areas as well as practical experience in fields such as electrochemistry, physical chemistry, hydrometallurgy, mineral processing, environmental chemistry, and materials chemistry.
