An exciting new opportunity has arisen for two experienced Bioinformaticians to join the Centre for Computational & Systems Medicine (CCSM) at Murdoch University. The CCSM harnesses the deep metabolic phenotyping capabilities of the Australian National Phenome Centre (ANPC) to generate high throughput, phenomic profiles that define the metabolic status of an individual and contribute to the understanding of disease risk and aetiology. It brings scientists and clinicians together in an interdisciplinary environment, building on the academic strengths in cutting edge analytical chemistry, data science and data visualisation.

The CCSM has partnered with the McCusker Charitable Foundation to form the “Global COVID-19 Metabolic Risk Prediction Unit” as part of the University’s COVID-19 research initiatives. The aim of this partnership is to collate research data from the ANPC and international collaborators to produce models that enables early prediction of disease severity as well as the outcome of patients to antiviral or vaccine therapies. This position provides the successful candidate with the opportunity to work with complex, multi-dimensional data, and contribute tothe global effort to control the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Role

This position is an opportunity for an experienced Bioinformatician or researcher to join this unique Centre under the scientific leadership of Professor Elaine Holmes (Director of CCSM and WA Premier’s Fellow in Phenomics and Systems Medicine) and Professor Jeremy Nicholson (Executive Director of the ANPC and the Pro Vice Chancellor Health Futures Institute). CCSM Bioinformaticians collate, manage and study metabolic phenotyping data using dedicated in-house databases and informatics pipelines; key duties include the application of data (pre-) processing workflows and to perform data modelling tasks for statistical evaluation, result visualisation and contextualisation within respective study frameworks.

Skills and Experience

The preferred candidate will be a highly motivated Bioinformatician who is passionate about research in metabolic phenotyping to deliver translational outcomes in precision medicine and personalised health. The candidateis PhD qualified (or possessing equivalent work experience) in chemistry, biology or computer science with a focus on bioinformatics, chemometrics, metabolomics, analytical chemistry or a related field.

 You will be experienced in the following:

• Proficiency in programming languages such as R, Python, MATLAB and JavaScript
• Demonstrated ability to apply statistical techniques suitable for the analysis of complex data sets including sequencing or metabonomic data
• Experienced in the development of statistical modelling pipelines relevant to metabonomics/metabolomics
• Experience in the development of methods for visualization of complex datasets
• Ability to communicate complex bioinformatics approaches to non-specialists as well as general ability to communicate well, conveying ideas and concepts clearly and effectively in speech and in writing
• Willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative
• Strong time management and organizational skills
