About the position

We invite applications for an Associate Professor or full Professor in the area of high fidelity numerical simulations applied to fluid mechanics in the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The position will be based within the Thermo-Fluid Mechanics group to strengthen its research activities in numerical simulations and machine learning data-driven analysis applied to fundamental and practical research areas in fluid mechanics.

The position is within the Thermo-fluids research Group in EPT which covers a wide range of fundamental and applied research. The group is internationally active in the general research areas of turbulent flows, multi-phase flows, waves, aerodynamics and thermal energy. In addition to access to local and national super computing resources, the group has several unique experimental facilities including a large wind tunnel and water channel each with active grids, a large-scale turbulence mixing tank and a newly refurbished turbulent combustion lab.

Given the rapid developments in both super computing, as well as deep learning and data-driven methods in fluid mechanics, we would particularly like to expand our research activities in these areas. As such, we strongly encourage applications from candidates with a background in Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS), Large-Eddy Simulations (LES), and new numerical methods applied to transport phenomena in turbulent flows and/or other fluid mechanics problems.

Applicants should have expertise in high-fidelity simulations of turbulent or multi-phase flows with significant experience in programming, building and upgrading numerical solvers for massively parallel simulations (MPI or GPU based) and/or in the development of advanced algorithms for analysis of large datasets.

We are looking for candidates who have the potential and ambition to be a scientific leader in their field and have a collaborative spirit. The candidate must be able to demonstrate academic independence and original thinking and research potential through their publications as well as the ability to develop their ideas into successful research grants. It will be seen as an advantage for the applicants to have strong international connections either through their PhD or post-doctoral research, or through close collaborations.

Duties of the position

The successful candidate is expected to develop a research portfolio within the areas of high fidelity numerical simulations and data driven methods in fundamental and applied fluid mechanics. They will be expected to actively secure research funding through regular proposal writing, build a strong international profile and publish their work in leading journals. They must be able to work both independently and in collaboration with colleagues within the group.

In addition, they will also be required to undertake undergraduate teaching and the supervision of Master’s students.  Teaching duties will primarily be in the area of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics for introductory level courses, and specialist courses in fluid mechanics with an emphasis on numerical methods and computational fluid dynamics.

Required selection criteria

Full Professor:

The position of Professor within fluid mechanics requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-2. 

  • A documented track record of research excellence through publications in high impact journals, H-Index
  • Documented ability to attract research funding through national and international funding instruments and project management
  • International collaborations
  • Expertise in high fidelity numerical simulations using LES or DNS applied to fluid mechanics problems
  • Expertise in programming and developing numerical solvers for massively parallel simulations (MPI or GPU based)
  • Expertise in data driven methods for large datasets
  • Development of undergraduate/graduate courses
  • Supervision of Master’s students, PhD students and Post-doctoral researchers
  • Participation in the development of educational quality in the work environment

Associate Professor:

The position of Associate Professor within fluid mechanics requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4. 

  • A documented track record of research excellence through publications in high impact journals, H-Index
  • Potential to attract research funding commensurate with career stage
  • International experience
  • Expertise in high fidelity numerical simulations using LES or DNS applied to fluid mechanics problems
  • Expertise in programming and developing numerical solvers for massively parallel simulations (MPI or GPU based)
  • Experience in data driven methods for large datasets

Professor and Associate Professor:

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred selection criteria

  • Expertise in high fidelity numerical simulations of high Reynolds number canonical turbulent flow problems or multi-phase flows in particular particle laden or bubble flows, heat transfer
  • Ability to complement and bring a new research dimensions to the Thermofluids research group
  • Experience with the use of national/European super computing infrastructure
  • Interest/experience to develop deep learning approaches

We offer 

Salary and conditions

In a position as Professor (code 1013) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 700 000 to NOK 1 000 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. In a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 600 000 to NOK 900 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

The assessment will emphasize research track record, education, research experience and personal suitability as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.
