This is an exciting opportunity to work on a research project within the Faculty of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences.

St Mary’s is a strong university community characterised by trust and respect among staff and students and values that are built on our Catholic ethos.

The University has a student-focused mission aimed at preparing students for fulfilled lives, successful careers and social commitment. We do this through excellent, research-enriched teaching in a strong community of mutual respect based on our Catholic ethos and identity. A high proportion of our students come from low-income families or are the first in their families to attend university. We are committed to providing them with increasingly high levels of teaching, learning, student experience and employability.

The University has a number of important research strengths. One of these research strengths is at the interface of religion, economics, Christian social thought and public policy which is pursued through the Benedict XVI Centre for Religion and Society and a research cluster on business ethics.

The University has a website which is developing as a resource on Catholic social teaching and thought. The University produces world-leading and internationally excellent research in this area. This position will contribute to the development of that research programme and also contribute to the development of an existing programme of research and public engagement. St. Mary’s has received research grants which will allow us to employ a research associate who will undertake a programme of both research and public engagement.

The research will focus mainly, but not solely, on Christian faiths and be focused on questions of fiscal policy and property rights and their relationship to the common good.

The research associate will undertake research and develop briefings, short articles and work with think tanks in the public square to create and disseminate research in this area.

The University will provide appropriate training and support to an appointee who is at the beginning of their academic career to ensure that they are well prepared for the next step on their academic journey.    We invite applications from all those who have an appropriate background. You will have completed your PhD studies (though not necessarily your viva voce or other examination) and you will have a strong interest in and understanding of Catholic social thought and its relevance to public policy. You will have well-developed research, writing and presentation skills.
