About the team

This position will be embedded with the work done by research fellows and PhD students at the School of Biological Sciences and at the Oceans Institute, and in association with partners at the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre. We will integrate current and innovative research on the use of models to assist our understanding of the marine environment, and the coordination and participation in research expeditions to remote locations.

About the opportunity

You will join a collaborative team of researchers focused on understanding the drivers of habitat distribution and ecosystem ecology at Shark Bay and other WA coastal sites as part of the Integrated Coastal Analyses and Sensor Technology (ICoAST) project. The ICoAST project is multi-disciplinary, multi-institution project. You will be required to travel to Shark Bay, WA involving overnight stays to work in remote locations.

Reporting to Research Fellow, Dr Matthew Fraser you will also work on areas of overlap in Oceanography/Hydrodynamics and Spatial Ecology theme, providing habitat data and analytical context.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:

  • PhD in Marine Science, Environmental Microbiology or related discipline
  • Excellent research and publication profile relative to opportunity
  • Experience in coordinating and in conducting research expeditions (including in remote locations) to collect environmental genomics and marine habitat data (physiology, ecological or biogeochemical)
  • Ability to perform standard molecular laboratory methods (e.g. DNA extraction, quality control, microscopy etc.) and conduct bioinformatics using programming languages such as R to analyse large sequencing files, and present results in a reproducible and accessible manner
  • Ability to work in a collaborative research team and to build effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders

About you

To be successful in this position, you will be an enthusiastic researcher with excellent track record in publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals relative to opportunity. You must be able to use your own initiative and problem solve whilst also being able to work effectively and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary research team. You will be a highly organised individual who is flexible and adaptable in a dynamic working environment.

A valid C class driver’s license and Rescue Diver qualification with experience in conducting scientific diving will be required.
