Job Description Summary

This is a senior leadership position at the Netter Center that serves on the senior leadership team of the Netter Center; develops and advances the regional, national and global outreach activities of the Netter Center; oversees all development and alumni relation activities; supervises key staff members; collaborates on research and publications; as well as supports the internal operations of the Center.

Job Description

The Associate Director takes a lead role in the dissemination, networking, and movement-building activities of the Netter Center. The position organizes the numerous site visits to the Netter Center that engage faculty, staff and students from SAS as well as other schools across campus and  community partners.  The Associate Director also organizes the Netter Center’s national and global conferences, including program development and logistics.

The position is liaison to Penn’s International Students and Scholars office. The Associate Director works closely with other regional, national, and global organizations that promote higher education’s role in democratic civic and community engagement. The position supports the work of the Anchor Institutions Task Force (AITF), an organization in which the University plays a leadership role and for which the Netter Center director is founding chair, as well as staffs the International Consortium for Higher Education, Civic Responsibility and Democracy (IC), which is administered at Penn and chaired by the Netter Center director. The IC works in collaboration with the Council of Europe, the International Association of Universities, and the Organization of American States. The Associate Director serves as the executive secretary of the IC, organizing its steering committee calls, and assisting with planning of its global forums, web site maintenance, publications, and membership development. The Netter Center Associate Director supports Penn’s anchor institution activity, collaborating with the Office of the Executive Vice President to help advance Penn’s role as a model of democratic anchor institution engagement.

The Associate Director serves as liaison to Penn Development and Alumni Relations, particularly working with Central Development, SAS Advancement, and Alumni Relations. The position staffs the Netter Center National Advisory Board, working closely with the Director and the Board Chairs to plan its meetings, committee calls, and other activities. The position also stewards gifts, generates proposals, and supports the development of the Netter Center alumni network.

The Associate Director also supervises a number of key staff at the Netter Center. The Associate Director supervises the assistant director, working closely with her or him on front office management and administrative operations, staff and student development, web site design and maintenance, marketing and communication activities, and development of reports such as the Netter Center’s Annual Report, serving as co-editor. The Associate Director supervises the director of the regional consortium housed at the Netter Center, Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development (PHENND), attends the PHENND steering committee meetings as well as other PHENND activities, supports its conference planning, and supervises its budget. The Associate Director supervises the training and technical assistance coordinator for post-secondary success who also co-teaches with the Center director. The position also helps advise the director of evaluation, who has a team of undergraduate and graduate student research assistants and a faculty oversight committee. 

The Associate Director collaborates closely with the Netter Center director on research, publications, and presentations. The associate director serves as co-editor of the Netter Center’s journal, Universities and Community Schools.

The Associate Director works with the Center director, other senior leaders, and the business administrators on the overall financial planning for the Netter Center and the ongoing monitoring of funds.

Qualifications:

Master's Degree with 5 to 7 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, is required. Over 10 years of experience working in higher education, particularly university-community partnerships is strongly preferred.  Experience with national and global networks of higher education is strongly preferred. The candidate must possess exemplary research and writing  and editing skills. Prior publication in academic journal/monograph is preferred.  Proficiency in the Office suite of programs in required.  Must have experience with donor stewardship and board management, as well as development of gift and grant proposals. Excellent organization skills are required including experience in managing major events. Prior experience in managing staff is required.  The candidate must be able to work with a diverse group of people, both internal to Penn and external.  Ability to manage website and social media is preferred.
