012509 UCD Research Assistant, UCD School of Medicine/Charles Institute of Dermatology, 36 months (0.5FTE) - part time

The UCD Charles Institute of Dermatology has an ongoing research programme led by Prof. Des Tobin to investigate pigment cell (melanocyte) biology in health and disease, and the particular focus of this project will be on how human skin pigment cells become unstable to potential result in melanoma formation. In the midst of voluminous melanoma research data, this project takes a step back to reassess fundamental variability in the molecular stability of melanocytes in different human skin anatomic compartments (incl. skin epidermis and hair follicle). We also aim to identify pathways to induce apoptosis in pigment cells including neoplastic pigment cells (e.g., melanoma), by gaining much-needed new insights into how precursors of pigment cell neoplasms (incl. melanoma) become unstable. Specifically, this position aims to gain understanding of melanocyte to melanoma homeostasis in human skin, rather than in more commonplace rodent/fish melanoma models.

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant for this project. You will conduct specified laboratory research experiments and analysis of results, with training and supervision by a full-time postdoctoral research also assigned to this project, in addition to other group members.
