Plymouth College of Art is one of a small number of independent art schools remaining in the UK’s Higher Education sector, and is nationally and internationally recognised for its ethical commitment to creative learning [through pedagogical innovation] and social justice [through community impact and social mobility]. PCA continues to foster international partnerships, developing a vibrant culture of scholarship and research. In 2018, the College was awarded Taught Degree Awarding Powers by the Privy Council, and has recently established 3 Academic Schools: Arts + Media; Design + Communication; Critical + Cultural Studies.

Forward thinking, PCA is a creative community working across the fields of contemporary arts, design and media, offering pre-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate study with a focus on inquiry-led practice and integrated learning. The College puts the student at the centre of their learning as curious and creative practitioners, and is committed to interdisciplinary dialogue and open resources, providing an exciting context for collaboration, network building, and professional opportunities.

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and ambitious Senior Lecturer for the BA (Hons) Painting Drawing & Printmaking award. This substantive post of Senior Lecturer will also assume a remit as Subject Leader for the BA award, working under the supervision of the Head of School Arts + Media to ensure effective operational management of the programme. The post holder will demonstrate a broad range of knowledge and expertise across the subject, a commitment to expanded practices (including new and emergent technologies), a range of professional contexts, and champion the integration of theory and practice in learning and teaching.

The post holder will have primary expertise and professional credentials in the discipline of contemporary painting as well as related cultural and theoretical discourses.

The ideal candidate will have a background in fine art and an active, current studio practice that exemplifies a depth of knowledge of the relationship between the history of painting and its place in contemporary art and exhibition. Expertise should range from material knowledge of techniques and processes to how the discourse of painting has evolved as a critical practice which informs and extends its materiality. A successful candidate will have a vital studio practice and significant record of exhibitions at a national and international level.

The post holder will be expected to provide strong and effective aesthetic, academic and managerial leadership for the BA (Hons) Painting Drawing & Printmaking programme, and become a key player in the development and growth of the subject area during a time of curricular change and innovation. The role will ensure the highest standards of learning and teaching, research and scholarship, knowledge transfer, and student experience in line with the ambitions of the School of Arts + Media, and in support of PCA’s strategic plan. The post holder will be active in their field contributing to Plymouth College of Art’s emerging research culture.
