The School of Communication is recruiting for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct research as part of the Nippon Foundation Ocean Nexus Center, a new interdisciplinary research group that studies changes, responses and solutions to societal issues that emerge in relationship with the oceans. The research focus of the position will be to examine the challenges and opportunities for coastal livelihoods associated with China’s Maritime Silk Road investments. The position will be based at the centrally located UTS Campus in Ultimo and will report directly to Associate Professor Michael Fabinyi. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will also join and collaborate with the Faculty’s fisheries social science Research Concentration.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) leads positive global change and advances social justice through our teaching, research and collaboration with industry and the community.Research in the FASS is interdisciplinary and externally engaged, focused on solving real-world problems. UTS research was rated ‘above world standard’ in the Excellence in Research for Australia assessment in Specialist Studies in Education, Political Science, Cultural Studies, Linguistics and in Language, Communication and Culture.

About the Role:

  • Planning and conducting research.
  • Producing high-quality publications.
  • Work as part of a team.
  • Plan and develop the annual operating research budget,manage research within the constraints of the agreed budget.

About You:

  • Experience in social science research – such as data collection, research design, project management, report writing, writing peer reviewed publications.
  • PhD in anthropology, development studies, environmental studies, human geography, international relations, political science, sociology, or similar.
  • Sound knowledge of social science research methods.
  • Knowledge of the social aspects of fisheries, aquaculture, marine conservation and natural resource management in China or in other countries.

Chinese written language skills would be highly desirable.

Base Salary Range: $90 477 to $97,120 pa(Level A. Step 3 - 4)

This role attracts 17%superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a fixed term basis for 24 months.
