The School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering is one of the most research active schools at City, both in terms of publication numbers and research income. The school contributed decisively to City's excellent results in The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, an exercise to assess research quality at all UK higher education research institutions.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics is pleased to advertise Marie Curie – Early Stage Researchers positions to begin in 2020, as part of the European Industrial Doctorates of the European Commission NextMGT project. The post is funded for 3 years and will allow the students to participate in an exciting research and training programme, enhancing their career perspectives in both the academic and non-academic sector. To be eligible, applicants should not have been living in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.
NextMGT ‘Next Generation of Micro Gas Turbines for High Efficiency, Low Emissions and Fuel Flexibility’ is a unique international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary research project, which has been jointly designed by a strong consortium that members include high-profile universities and world-leading industries, based in EU member states and other EU countries

The main focus of the project is optimisation of the operation and control of a micro gas turbine focusing on effective conversion of mechanical power to electricity.

Objectives: To develop innovative methods for the micro gas turbine system in relation to its integration with the electrical system, which includes a high-speed permanent magnet electricity generator, electrical drive, and control system. Algorithms will need to be developed to help minimise losses, and hence improve the overall performance, controllability and reliability of the micro gas turbine.

The successful candidates will receive a financial package including mobility and family allowance according to the rules for Early Stage Researchers in an EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks.

Responsibilities

He or she will work closely with the principal investigator and co-ordinator to ensure project deliverables and milestones are met in a timely manner; assist in the dissemination and outreach activities by providing suitable material to the project website; as well as play a role in raising the national and international profile of The Team by publishing articles in international journals, attendance at conferences and workshops.

Person Specification

The post holders must (i) be in the first 4 years of their research career, (ii) have a Masters (or equivalent) degree in Mechanical Engineering or Physics; knowledge of electrical machines and control would be an advantage (iii) Applicant should not have been living in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 3 years. (iv) Advanced understanding fundamentals of Engineering according to the specific topic (v) Understanding of analysis and modelling approaches.
