Applications are invited from a highly motivated and creative researcher to work on the exploration of fundamentals of heat transport and thermoelectric phenomena in two-dimensional materials (2DMs). The project is a key part of EU largest research consortium – Graphene Flagship http://graphene-flagship.eu/ and runs in the group of Prof. Oleg Kolosov at the Physics Department of Lancaster University. The project tackles a yet to be fully understood physical and material science phenomena in a wide family of 2DMs such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, materials that include both largest and lowest thermal conductivities known in any solid-state material. An overarching goal of the project is to advance our knowledge of nanoscale thermal phenomena in 2DMs that offer solutions for problems such as heat dissipation in microelectronics that for more than a decade blocks increase of processors speed, and finding novel paradigms for efficient thermoelectric materials and 2DM electronic and optoelectronic devices.

You should have a PhD (or about to be awarded a PhD) in Material Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related subject, and hands-on expertise in advanced scanning probe microscopy or experimental studies of physical properties of 2DMs. The experience in nanoscale thermal transport, and/or modelling is a clear advantage. A strong publication record in these areas and exceptional experimental skills are essential. You will use advanced nanoscale physical properties characterisation techniques including advanced scanning probe microscopy, time-domain optical methods, and nano-manufacturing in the state-of-the-art Lancaster IsoLab https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/physics/isolab/ and Lancaster Quantum Technology Centre https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/quantum-technology/ and you will work in a close interaction with the National Graphene Institute of Manchester University, a birthplace of Graphene https://www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk/about/ngi/, the National Physical Laboratory and multiple leading research groups across Europe.

The initial position is available immediately until 31st March 2023.
