We are seeking two talented epidemiologists/biostatisticians, with a relevant PhD (or MSc and equivalent research experience), a keen interest in using metabolomics data in epidemiological studies to explore determinants of variation in metabolic traits and their causal effects on reproductive, perinatal or cardiometabolic health, and a systematic and thorough approach to their work. You will work within Professor Deborah Lawlor’s programme in the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit at the University of Bristol and as part of her and Dr Carolina Borges’ teams linked to the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Accelerator Award in Bristol. This would be ideally suited to someone with a PhD who has some experience of analysing multidimensional multiscale data in large human population studies.

You will be appointed at either Research Associate (grade I) or Senior Research Associate (grade J) level depending on skills and experience.

The MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/integrative-epidemiology/) at the University of Bristol (MRC IEU) integrates molecular, cellular, clinical and population data to optimise the identification of causal effects of potentially modifiable exposures/risk factors on disease or health-related outcomes. It adopts a multidisciplinary approach to address issues of major public health and clinical relevance to the UK and global health agenda, drawing upon expertise in disciplines such as chemistry, econometrics, artificial intelligence and computer science, who have not traditionally worked closely with epidemiologists. The Unit currently consists of 6 linked programmes, including one led by DA Lawlor on reproductive and cardio-metabolic health that this post with be linked to.

The BHF-Accelerator Award in Bristol is a BHF-funded research programme integrating Bristol leading cardiovascular researchers from multiple disciplines (from pre-clinical to population sciences) to address challenges in two priority areas:

  • Identifying targets that could be effectively modified by pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions for the prevention and treatment of cardiometabolic or cardiovascular diseases.
  • Understanding the causes and causal mechanisms for the development (in utero and during early life) of adverse cardiometabolic, cardiovascular or congenital heart diseases, and how to accurately predict these outcomes.

For informal enquiries please contact : Professor Deborah Lawlor, email: pa-debbielawlor@bristol.ac.uk
