The University of New Brunswick and its Faculty of Law have a long and prominent history in higher education.  Founded in 1785, the University of New Brunswick is proud to be one of the first public universities in North America and the Faculty of Law, established in 1892, is one of the two oldest law faculties in the Commonwealth. From its main campuses in Fredericton and Saint John, New Brunswick, UNB offers undergraduate and graduate programs in more than 75 disciplines and continuing education in a variety of fields. With full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate degrees in the Faculties of Arts, Business, Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Forestry & Environmental Management, Kinesiology, Law, Management, Nursing, and Science, Applied Science & Engineering as well as certificates and diplomas, UNB’s innovative and interdisciplinary programs prepare students to tackle society’s challenges and create positive change.

Located on the Fredericton campus, UNB Law is at once a national law school — with alumni in law, business, government, and non-profit organizations across Canada — and a regional school with a strong presence in the legal fabric of Atlantic Canada. UNB Law enjoys an excellent reputation as a strong foundational law school. Graduates have included judges on the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Canada, and the superior and appeal courts of several provinces; provincial premiers; and federal and provincial cabinet ministers. Faculty members produce nationally and internationally recognized, cutting-edge research and scholarship in property law including intellectual property and natural resources, corporate commercial law including taxation and corporate governance, tort law including defamation and health law, constitutional law and international law including human rights, gender equality, Aboriginal law and cybersecurity.

Reporting to the Vice-President Academic (Fredericton), the Dean of Law is the public face of the Faculty of Law, responsible for the overall leadership of the Faculty and the Gérard V. La Forest Law Library. The Dean will bring strategic acumen and innovation to the Faculty, the University and the profession, contributing to the further development of the Faculty with regard to research, teaching, and service in the community.

As the ideal candidate, you are an accomplished leader, eminently qualified and enthusiastic about the opportunity to deliver on a new strategic direction, promote the mission of a small, excellent law school and improve access to justice within an increasingly diverse Canadian legal profession.  You have the ability to motivate and support high quality teaching and scholarship in a collegial academic setting. Your record demonstrates success in fostering a respectful, inclusive and collaborative work environment. You are committed to treating students as individuals and encouraging their development as professionals. You have an advanced degree in law and a strong background in academic leadership.

UNB respectfully acknowledges that its campus sits on unsurrendered and unceded traditional Wolastoqey land.   The lands of Wabanaki people were recognized in a series of Peace and Friendship Treaties to establish an ongoing relationship of peace, friendship and mutual respect between equal nations. The river that runs by the university is known as Wolastoq, along which live Wolastoqiyik, “the people of the beautiful and bountiful river.” Wolastoq is also known as the Saint John River.

The University of New Brunswick is committed to employment equity and fostering diversity within our community and developing an inclusive workplace that reflects the richness of the broader community that we serve. The University welcomes and encourages applications from all qualified individuals who will help us achieve our goals, including women, visible minorities, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, persons of any sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.

The university will provide support in its recruitment processes to applicants with disabilities, including accommodation that takes into account an applicant’s accessibility needs. If you require accommodation in order to participate as a candidate in the recruitment process, please contact accommodate@kbrs.ca or communicate your needs to the recruitment professional named in the job description.

The Search Committee will begin considering potential candidates this summer and will continue until the position is successfully filled.

If you’re interested in this opportunity, contact Katherine Frank at kfrank@kbrs.ca or Janet Rose at jrose@kbrs.ca, or submit your application online at: www.kbrs.ca/Career/13762
