Position Focus:

Yale University’s Information Security Office (ISO) coordinates the institution’s response to cyber security risk, enabling Yale’s mission of research, teaching, preservation of knowledge and clinical care.

The ISO performs a range of security functions as part of this coordination mission, such as intrusion and vulnerability detection, incident response, policy development, training and awareness, risk assessment, information system classification and analysis, enterprise identity and access management services, regulatory and compliance attestation, disaster recovery coordination, third-party risk management, and security consulting.
Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer, the Manager of Cyber Security Operations and Engineering is responsible for critical security functions including intrusion detection, vulnerability management, threat intelligence, and incident response. The position is also responsible for key security technologies deployed across the network and across endpoints, such as firewalls, data loss detection/prevention, anti-virus, and more. This position is a vital part of Yale’s information security leadership team.

The Security Operations and Engineering (SOE) team includes 12 security analysts, with several of these as new positions to be recruited. There are additional internal and external groups augmenting the SOE team as tier one resources. The SOE is an area of active transformation, with strong support from the board room to the budget sheet. There are also important parallel transformations underway which support the work of the SOE, such as a major network redesign. The position requires collaborative, hands-on leadership ability, with the ability to think strategically, plan to the strategy, and oversee execution of the plan. The position must foster a positive, collaborative and engaged team dynamic in the pursuit of SOE priorities, which includes active development of individual team members. The position must be able to offer strong technical guidance as necessary. Communication and prioritization skills are essential, with a strong track record in information security as both practitioner and leader. Experience with specific technology stacks is less important than depth of experience with similar technology stacks used by SOE teams, and is less important than the demonstrated ability to make efficient use of technology by developing effective processes that fit the organizational culture and mission. Accountable for all aspects of staff management, hiring, coaching, training, performance reviews and recommending pay actions and promotions for the Security Engineering and Operations teams.
