Position Focus:

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development at the School of Medicine, the Director of Alumni Engagement serves as the public face of the Yale School of Medicine to its alumni community. The Director is responsible for developing, marketing, implementing and evaluating a strategic plan for a comprehensive alumni relations program to develop, support, and strengthen relationships among and between alumni and the school. The Director will also develop and strengthen Association of Yale Alumni in Medicine (AYAM) programs, support alumni volunteer leadership and initiate alumni involvement in activities providing a link between the School of Medicine and its alumni/ae. The Director will oversee volunteer engagement strategies and tracking systems and oversee alumni data management processes and analyses to measure alumni engagement and satisfaction. S/he will support events both on and off campus, including events with the Dean, faculty and alumni speakers, current Yale School of Medicine students, and class reunions.

This position will serve as a partner to the YSM Development team in the planning, execution and evaluation of a comprehensive engagement program that enables engagement of alumni in philanthropic activities that support the school.

Please note that this position requires the candidate to be able to travel and to work occasional nights and weekends.

Essential Duties

  1. Oversee the development of a comprehensive program to engage Yale School of Medicine’s alumni and friends in meaningful ways aimed at fostering lifelong connections.
  2. Identify, recruit and support alumni/ae volunteer leadership for AYAM and its programs.
  3. Serve as primary professional liaison between AYAM and the Yale Alumni Association (YAA) to maximize sharing of best practices for mutual benefit.
  4. Responsible for annual Reunion Weekend including identification and recruitment of reunion program chairs, planning and implementation of the communications plan, promoting/facilitating of attendance and registration, and organizing all programming andlogistical aspects of the multi-day event.
  5. Plan and execute all alumni events for YSM including assemblies, special class programs, board meetings, seminars and special events. Work with YAA representatives on special events and programs that include the School of Medicine.
  6. Provide support to students and alumni of YSM programs (MD, PhD, and PA). Work with current medical students and the Office of Student Affairs to define alumni leadership for the future and to recruit new alumni volunteers. Coordinate with Office of Student Affairs to provide appropriate assistance for student activities such as the White Coat Ceremony, Graduation Banquet, Match Day, etc.
  7. In conjunction with the Associate Dean and Program Director of the Physician Assistant Program, support a PA Alumni Outreach program.
  8. Be an active and positive participant in YSM Development and Alumni Office leadership team.
  9. Supervise a development associate responsible for developing correspondence, publicity and other materials designed to inform and update. Provide coaching and mentoring to encourage personal development and program excellence.
  10. Prepare briefing materials for volunteers, faculty and administrators who will participate in alumni activities.
  11. Actively collaborate with YSM development team to maximize the effectiveness of all alumni engagement
  12. Maintain regular communication with YSM development staff about alumni activities and issues.
  13. Interact with representatives of university departments and medical school departments on matters of importance to YSM alumni.
  14. Maintain close contact with Office of Communications to facilitate the accomplishment of alumni affairs goals through YSM publications, electronic communications and web presence, i.e. Yale Medicine, Medicine@Yale, 333 Cedar Street, etc.
  15. Working with internal and external constituents, take the lead in preparing annual operating budget for non-fundraising alumni outreach, and work within that budget.
  16. Direct the efforts of administrative and development associates, as needed, on selected alumni outreach events and communications, and provide relevant input on respective performance reviews.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s and 5 years of experience with alumni relations and/or volunteer groups or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Familiarity with Yale and their programs. Previous managerial experience. Special event experience.
