Position Focus:

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student & External Affairs, the Senior Marketing and Public Relations Director for the School of Public Health, (YSPH) develops and manages the School’s entire public relations, marketing and communications effort. The Senior Director will be responsible for managing a team of public relations and communications professionals (including freelance workers), developing strategic and innovative marketing and communications plans to support the overall strategic goals of the School and further enhance its image, reputation and visibility both domestically and globally, overseeing the School’s branding presence, and ensures a consistent messaging to the School’s identified target markets and building relationships to facilitate exposure of the work of the School and its faculty to impact the overall health and well being of local, state, national and international populations.

Essential Duties include:

  • Work with school stakeholders to develop comprehensive and strategic public relations program that identifies, builds and maintains relationships with public health professionals, administrators from other public health schools, political leaders, and community organizers in order to enhance the overall reputation of the school and impact the health of local, state, national, and international populations.
  • Work with the Associate Dean and school stakeholders to identify critical target markets that would be critical to achieving the strategic goals of the School.
  • Develop and implement a strategic marketing plan for the School that develops marketing messaging to identified target markets and enables the School to achieve its strategic goals in such areas as student and faculty recruitment, development and fundraising, and disseminating the work and expertise of the faculty.
  • ​Develop a comprehensive and strategic communications plan for the School that reaches target markets with developed strategic messaging and branding by innovating with, and using existing, technology and communication platforms (social media, live streaming, website, etc.). Develop a strategic marketing brand for YSPH.
  • ​Work to ensure that the YSPH brand is accepted and utilized by all in the organization.
  • Work closely with Yale’s Office of Public Affairs and Communications to expand the school’s media outreach efforts by proactively marketing the school’s scientific expertise to leading journalists and media outlets with a goal of increasing the number of YSPH-related stories in local, state, national and international media.
  • ​Work to anticipate stories and have YSPH expert available as public health-related stories break. Organize the development of press releases and the handling media inquiries. Direct the promotion of special events and activities to the appropriate communities.
  • ​Develop ongoing strategies with YSPH leadership for engaging and securing high profile speakers that will draw large audiences and attention to the school.
  • ​Manage messages and outreach in times of crisis. Draft timely responses on behalf of the dean.
  • ​Educate School leadership on effective marketing and communication strategies, and manages relationships with key stakeholders with a high degree of professionalism and understanding of stakeholder goals.
  • ​Ensure organizational effectiveness through short-term and long-range planning with insight into target markets, channels, and culture; coordinate with other professionals to achieve the Schools goals.
  • ​Direct the production of all YSPH print marketing materials; including Yale Public Health magazine. Serve as magazine editor.
  • ​Oversee financial and human resources for department. Develop and monitor annual budget. Manage all office staff, including hiring, training, mentoring, professional development, and performance evaluations.

Essential Duties

  1. In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Student & External Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Public Affairs works with school stakeholders to develop and coordinate comprehensive and strategic public relations program that identifies, builds and maintains relationships with public health professionals, administrators from other public health schools, political leaders, and community organizers in order to enhance the overall reputation of the school and impact the health of local, state, national, and international populations.
  2. Work with the Associate Dean and school stakeholders to identify critical target markets and populations that would be critical to achieving the strategic goals of the School.
  3.   13. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Masters degree in a related field and 8 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated understanding of and proven leadership in marketing, public relations, public affairs, and communications management with the ability to handle crises and a wide range of complex short- term and long- term issues.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proven managerial and supervisory skills.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Well-developed interpersonal, presentation and oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Analytical skills with the ability to manage complex databases.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office which including complex databases and spreadsheets.
