The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) is a unique interdisciplinary Research Centre of Excellence (RCE), funded by National Research Foundation, Ministry of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS). Hosted by NTU in partnership with NUS, SCELSE is linking new insights from the life sciences with expertise from emerging technologies in engineering and natural sciences to understand, harness and control microbial biofilm communities.

SCELSE is looking for a Research Assistant to work on a project funded by the National Research Foundation to do ecological surveys to examine the function of coral microbiomes and the role of the microbiome in coral-macroalgal interactions.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of the Research Assistant will be to process coral, algal, and seawater samples in the laboratory, maintain laboratory manuals and notes, and maintain laboratory supplies. The Research Assistant will also be involved in controlled experiments performed either at the St. John’s Island National Marine Laboratory (SJINML) or in the field. Overall, the project aims to measure community changes in the symbiotic algae and the host microbiomes of corals in response to environmental stress, including interaction with algae. The project will also include comparisons of gene expression profiles of the coral holobiont in response to algal treatments.

Job Requirements:

  • A recognised bachelor’s degree with strengths in molecular biology, meta-genomics and/or meta-transcriptomics or coral ecology
  • Excellent writing, communication, and organisational skills are essential
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment
  • An advanced dive certificate with a minimum of 35 dives completed is advantageous

We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
