Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost and Deputy University Librarian, the Director of Access Services will oversee and shape the strategic direction of Penn Libraries user-facing services and initiatives across the seven libraries of the Directorate. The Director of Access Services will be responsible for all aspects of operations and services including recruitment, training, and supervision of Circulation, Resource Sharing, Collection and Stack Management, FacultyEXPRESS, Reserves, and the Mail Room at the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center. In coordination with Library Facilities and FRES, the Director of Access Services will have oversight of Van Pelt-Dietrich Library public facility within Access Services such as Graduate Study Center, lactation rooms, wellness spaces, assistive technology spaces, group study rooms, and faculty studies.

Job Description

The Director of Access Services will oversee and shape the strategic direction of Penn Libraries user-facing services and initiatives across the seven libraries of the Directorate. Qualifications:

MLS from an ALA-accredited program and a minimum of five years of increasingly responsible professional experience in an academic research library or equivalent combination of education and experience. Extensive supervisory experience of support staff is required, preferably in a collective bargaining agreement environment Demonstrated collaborative and organizational strength, and excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship building skills Strong customer service orientation. Extensive experience with library management systems, including cataloging, inventory control, request management systems, and patron initiated services. A demonstrated commitment to quality control, process improvement, analytical skills, and the use of metrics, statistics, and other evidence based management tools.

Demonstrated knowledge of emerging trends in technology tools for enhancing services, improving service performance, and implementing new service initiatives in an academic research library. Experience with budget management and financial systems is preferred. Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and active involvement in professional activities.
