A postdoctoral position is available at the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) https://www.helsinki.fi/en/helsinki-institute-of-life-science, University of Helsinki, Finland to work in the research group of Dr. Helena Kilpinen (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/cellular-genetics-of-disease). The position is part of a research program that aims to understand the cellular basis of neurodevelopmental disorders. The Kilpinen group combines computational and experimental methods in cellular genetics to study how genetic variation affects cell phenotypes and contributes to differential disease risk. The Kilpinen laboratory is based at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/hilife-fimm) at the Meilahti biomedical campus, and it has close links with the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-biological-and-environmental-sciences) and the Neuroscience Center (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/hilife-neuroscience-center).

Role description:

We are seeking at least one postdoctoral researcher to work on a collaborative project that uses human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) to model neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). The project is focused on studying how different types of mutations that are known to cause NDDs influence the ability of human iPSCs to differentiate into different types of neuronal cells. The primary goal of the project is to analyse single-cell transcriptomic data from pooled differentiation experiments and identify cell types and developmental trajectories that may be altered between wild-type and mutant cells. A key aim of the work is to contrast single-cell data from iPSC-based cultures to data from the brain, to better understand how cell types generated in vitro correspond for e.g. to cell types observed in the developing brain. The post holder will be responsible for planning, conducting, and co-supervising computational research within the project and in the Kilpinen group.

Key requirements:

We are seeking a creative and highly motivated individual with primary interest in single-cell genomics and data analysis. Candidates should have a PhD in bioinformatics, genetics, computational biology, statistics or other related disciplines. The ideal candidate will have experience in at least one of the aforementioned areas, and a strong interest in the others. Previous experience with large-scale genomic and/or single-cell datasets, and strong programming skills are considered an advantage.

Appointment details:

The position is available from September 2020 onwards, or earlier, if required. It is a two-year fixed-term position, with a possibility of extension. Trial period of 6 months will be applied. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it may be possible to start the position remotely, if required. Multiple candidates may be recruited.

The salary will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance with the overall starting salary amounting to approximately 3443-3621 EUR per month, depending on the qualifications and previous relevant research experience of the candidate.
