TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR, Physics, to serve as a joint member of the Technical Services Group and Junior Laboratory divisions of the Physics Department’s technical teaching staff. Will provide technical support to the undergraduate physics program, including introductory studio physics (TEAL) subjects 8.01/8.02 (8.01/8.02 (Physics I and Physics II)) in a group-based, active learning environment; the physics advanced lab (Junior Lab) subjects 8.13/8.14, in which student explore and perform various famous experiments in modern physics; and other subjects as needed. Responsibilities include assisting with the maintenance of and improvements to experiments, including repairs and adaptations of modern technologies, general maintenance, and upgrades to lab environment; overseeing the Physics Department’s machine shops and serving as a member of the campus-wide machine shop managers group; and serving as the MIT environmental health and safety (EHS) representative.
REQUIRED: B.S. in physics, engineering, or related discipline; at least one year of related experience, which may include undergraduate teaching and/or laboratory work; experience using common electronic test and measurement equipment; competency using machines such as lathes, mills, etc.; ability to design, construct, maintain, and repair mechanical, electromechanical, and electronic instruments; competent scientific computing skills, e.g., MATLAB, Python, Latex, and LabVIEW; excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; and ability to routinely lift weights of fifteen to fifty pounds and move carts of demonstration equipment around campus several times per day.
