The School of Psychology

The School of Psychology is an ambitious and research intensive School in the Faculty of Science and Health. Established in 2019, DCU’s School of Psychology is composed of experienced and dedicated staff with expertise in a broad range of areas within the field of psychology. The School brings together our flagship BSc in Psychology, which has been running since 2010, and our suite of postgraduate courses. It continues to build on our longstanding research activity and collaborations, and its community engagement. The School is student-centred, research-intensive, globally engaged, collaborative and inclusive. It offers an innovative and exciting environment in which to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies in psychology and to undertake cutting-edge research.

Role Profile

We are seeking to recruit two temporary (11 month) positions at the level of Assistant Professor to provide cover for the 2020/21 academic year, as follows:

  • Position 1: expertise is sought in, but not limited to, neuropsychology, behavioural neuroscience, biological psychology and their related areas;
  • Position 2: expertise is required in, but not limited to, individual differences, psychometrics, clinical and their related areas.

The successful candidates will need to be able to start by September 2020 at the latest.

The successful candidates will conduct teaching in core and specialist areas of psychology and will also participate in the School’s external engagement activities. Further, the successful candidates are expected to support programme administration, placement supervision, research supervision and the service activities of the School and University.

Teaching and Learning

To contribute to the teaching and learning activity of the School of Psychology by:

  • Delivering modules in a manner consistent with the highest academic standards
  • Using a wide range of teaching and assessment methodologies which foster a deep approach to learning and which equip students with the skills and attributes needed to be lifelong learners
  • Working proactively to enhance and enrich existing modules and programmes
  • Contributing to the design and development of new modules and programmes
  • Providing research supervision for undergraduate students and taught postgraduate students

Research and Scholarship

To contribute to the research activity of the School of Psychology by:

  • Publishing new ideas and findings in high impact international journals
  • Achieving measurable societal, economic, individual, health, policy, professional, or capacity impact, as appropriate
  • Seeking funds to support research initiatives
  • Contributing to research activities such as conferences, seminars etc.
  • Contributing to the research culture and environment in the School and, where appropriate, working collaboratively on research initiatives.

Service and Contribution to University

To contribute to the leadership, management and administration of the School by:

  • Contributing proactively to relevant School and University committees, working groups and meetings
  • Actively engaging in accreditation-related activities
  • Delivering School roles to a high standard
  • Contributing to the running of the School’s activities through participation in, for example, promotional events and INTRA (work placement) visits.
  • External Engagement to enhance the reputation and impact of the School through engagement in external academic, business, professional, public sector and community activities

Candidate Requirements

Essential

  • An undergraduate degree and PhD in Psychology (or with an imminent submission expected), or their equivalents
  • Eligibility for graduate membership of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) must be demonstrated
  • Previous teaching and research experience

Desirable

  • Relevant experience in one of the following areas is highly desirable:
    • Position 1: neuropsychology, behavioural neuroscience, biological psychology and their related areas
    • Position 2: individual differences, psychometrics, clinical and their related areas.

Mandatory Training

The post holder will be required to undertake the following mandatory compliance training: GDPR, Orientation and Compliance. Other training may need to be undertaken when appropriate
