The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) has an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic scientific leader to help define and play a leading role in a growing interdisciplinary and multi-institutional effort to diagnose, simulate, and understand the complex interplay between materials science, plasma surface-interactions, and plasma-based nano-fabrication capabilities supporting industries of the future.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, expanding, and leading new research initiatives engaging researchers from academia, national laboratories, and industry while also supporting collaborating researchers and facility users. The ideal candidate will play a vital role in growing plasma-based nano-fabrication research into a significant element of the laboratory’s research portfolio and will be passionate about developing a strong program that enhances the laboratory’s interactions with Princeton University – especially in the area of quantum materials, devices, systems, and computers.

  • In close collaboration with the Directorate, develop a strategic plan and long-term vision for nano-fabrication research and development, along with a plan to execute the vision, including garnering funding, building the scientific infrastructure of facilities and capabilities, as well as recruiting and developing an outstanding and diverse workforce to support the vision.
  • Develop coordinated programs with Princeton University, including opportunities with the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials (PRISM) and Princeton University departments including Electrical Engineering and Physics.
  • Identify and build critical research collaborations with national laboratories, academic institutions, and private sector entities.
  • Advance science education and work to build a pipeline of the next generation of scientists and engineers in nano-fabrication and quantum information science and technology.
  • Act as chief spokesperson for the research area to internal groups, Princeton University, DOE, national labs, and other external entities.
  • In collaboration with the Directorate, assist the preparation and development of the annual budget, aid in the development of short and long-term financial strategies to ensure proper funding levels, and target and develop new funding sources.
  • Aid in the stewardship of and adherence to appropriate financial, procurement, budget, property, and accounting policies, procedures, and protocols for the respective division.
  • Effectively communicate relevant information to key stakeholders both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Hold regular meetings with direct reports and ensure effective collaborations within and integration of area programs.
  • Report to the Deputy Director for Research (initially) and Associate Laboratory Director for Low-Temperature-Plasma Surface Interactions (longer-term).



  • At least 10 years’ experience in the modeling, measurement, and fabrication of micro- and nano-electronic devices including quantum devices, systems, and computers. Experience in plasma processing tool diagnosis, usage, and/or operation is also highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish, organize, and lead new research initiatives and to develop and lead a highly capable team of researchers from academia, national laboratories, and industry.
  • Record of impactful publications in recognized scientific journals.


  • PhD or equivalent in electrical engineering, solid-state physics, or plasma physics
