About the position

We have a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Fellow at Department of Structural Engineering.

A two and a half year (2.5) postdoctoral position is available at the research group Biomechanics, Department of Structural Engineering, within the field of soft tissue biomechanics related to the upper airways and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

The position is associated with the Frinatek project VirtuOSA: virtual surgery in the upper airways new solutions to obstructive sleep apnea treatment. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project is a joint effort between solid mechanics (one Postdoctoral Fellow, this position), fluid mechanics (one PhD candidate), and medicine (one Postdoctoral Fellow, ear nose throat surgery). With this we will have access to patient specific data (e.g. CT scans of upper airways, airflow measurements pre and post surgery).

This postdoctoral position will address both experimental investigations and theoretical modeling. A biaxial soft tissue test rig will be utilized with diverse soft tissue materials and used in characterization of parameters for hyperelastic material models to be used in nonlinear finite element analysis. The material models will also be employed in fluid structure interaction simulations (task for the PhD position). SINTEF Industry contributes with CFD analyses and experimental validation.

You will report to Professor and Associate Professor.

Duties of the position

The candidate will participate actively in the virtuOSA team where the research tools are experimental, theoretical and numerical. The main discipline is solid biomechanics. The candidate will contribute with:

  • experimental investigations of soft tissue constituents representative of upper airway tissue (adipose, muscular, glandular, connective). Tissue constituents will be investigated separately and in combination. Tissue from other parts of the body will provide a basis, but also upper airway dissected tissue will be investigated.
  • defining appropriate material models for the soft tissue response, along with parameter estimation based on the experimental measurements.
  • some implementation (modifications) of the material models in e.g. ABAQUS UMAT routines. Finite element simulation of patient specific parts of upper airway.
  • discussions with the project team and giving input to the FSI activities.

It is expected that the results from the project is published in peer-reviewed journals and at scientific conferences.

Required selection criteria

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree in solid mechanics, structural mechanics, computational mechanics or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

If, for any reason, you have taken a career break or have had an atypical career and wish to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognizing that the quantity of your research may be reduced as a result.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

  • the applicant should be fluent in English (spoken and written). Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills (TOEFL, IELTS, CAE or CPE).

Preferred selection criteria

  • background in biomechanics, structural mechanics, experimental mechanics, computational mechanics or similar.
  • a strong background in nonlinear finite element methods.

Personal characteristics

  • ambitious person with good workability
  • highly motivated to perform interdisciplinary research
  • willing to work both independently and collaborate with other researchers
  • able to carry out theoretical, experimental and numerical work

We offer

Salary and conditions
