Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, with oversight from Faculty Co-Director Cade Massey, the People Lab Director is responsible for the development and management of the People Lab, and plays a critical role in advancing the Lab’s product development, project implementation, and faculty-driven research projects; the cultivation of relationships with partner organizations; and coordination with research partners throughout the research process. The Director serves as the primary liaison with Wharton stakeholders, particularly Executive Education and the McNulty Leadership Program to leverage the People Lab’s output for use with students, alumni, and clients, and fuel the Lab’s ongoing data collection. The Director is also a critical member of the Wharton People Analytics (WPA) team, contributing to and integrating WPA’s strategic goals and research portfolio into People Lab as relevant, particularly in relation to WPA’s work in sports analytics, assessment, and leadership development.

Under the guidance of the Executive Director, the Director is responsible for the staffing of the lab, the construction and management of its budget, reporting on the Lab’s progress, and its day-to-day management. The Director works in close collaboration with the WPA research team to design and execute People Lab research studies, and contribute to the work of the WPA research team. The People Lab Director is expected to bring sophisticated research and communication skills, subject matter expertise, and experience and interest in moving projects from conception to implementation/publication with efficiency, intellectual rigor, and a collaborative spirit.

Job Description

Principal responsibilities/duties would include:

  • Consult with leaders in partner organizations about their research and consulting needs. Identify new initiatives which can lead to project extension or new proposals
  • Prepare research proposals for submissions to client organizations. This will typically include multiple interactions with both faculty and the client
  • Design research studies and perform data analysis
  • Coordinate the research involvement of Wharton and affiliated faculty. This involves working independently with a wide range of Wharton faculty, as well as coordinating and synthesizing their work
  • Supervise at least 2 research assistants and student workers
  • Write papers for publication in popular academic outlets
  • Write non-academic research summaries
  • Present and discuss research results with clients


Expertise in assessment, psychology, and sports analytics highly desired. PhD or equivalent doctoral degree is preferred, Master's degree required and 3 - 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Project management experience is required. Other required experience includes:

  • advanced data analytics
  • exceptional interpersonal fluency
  • strong presentation skills
  • ability to interact professionally at the highest levels of organizations
  • supervisory experience
