Job Description Summary 

This part-time position will train, supervise, and advise up to six full-time wildlife health technicians.

Job Description

This part-time position will train, supervise, and advise up to six full-time wildlife health technicians responsible for collecting and delivering animal carcasses and specimens to diagnostic laboratories in support of the Pennsylvania Wildlife Futures Program and the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s wildlife health programs. Disease surveillance will focus on a wide variety of diseases that affect Pennsylvania’s 480 species of wild birds and mammals.

Duties:

  • Develop procedures and protocols for personnel safety, communications, necropsy techniques, tissue extraction, carcass disposal, documentation, specimen preservation and packaging, specimen transport.
  • Provide initial and ongoing training in basic necropsy techniques, tissue extraction, proper carcass and specimen documentation, carcass and specimen preservation, and specimen packaging for transport.
  • Answer questions from and provide advice and recommendations to the wildlife technicians when they encounter unfamiliar situations and/or challenging issues while working in the field.
  • Act as a liaison between the wildlife health technicians and other personnel within the Pennsylvania Wildlife Futures Program and the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
  • Coordinate sample collection and delivery coverage in the event of technician vacations and illnesses or regional events that require additional personnel resources.
  • Perform gross necropsies and sample collection as needed in support of the wildlife pathologist.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Highly advanced professional discipline. VMD/DVM degree and 5-7 years of experience is required.

Working Conditions

  • Office, library, computer room; Requires extensive safety training; Exposure to chemicals, outdoor weather & moving machinery; Requires protective devices; On-Call (beeper); High dust, dirt, grease environment.

Physical Effort

  • Occasional lifting 25-50 lbs; Intermittently sitting/standing/stooping; Using tools requiring high dexterity.
