PhD Position in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics
About the position
We seek an outstanding candidate for a PhD position in theoretical condensed matter physics at the Center for Quantum Spintronics (QuSpin) in the Department of Physics, NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. The position will start in October 2020, or as agreed.
The PhD position has a duration of three years with the possibility of up to one-year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department.
The appointment involves research under the supervision of Dr. Alireza Qaiumzadeh, and in direct collaboration with theoretical research partners in Adam Mickiewicz University-Poland (Dr. Anna Dyrdał) and QuSpin-NTNU (Prof. Arne Brataas). In this project, we will also have a close collaboration with leading experimental groups in Germany and the Netherlands.
The position is covered within GRIEG, Polish-Norwegian research project: ‘Spin and charge transport in low-dimensional novel quantum materials. The GRIEG is a part of the Basic Research Programme funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and operated by the National Science Centre in Poland.

QuSpin carries out research in theoretical and experimental condensed-matter physics. QuSpin`s principal goal is to describe, characterize, and develop recently identified quantum approaches to control electric signals, conceptually different from those existing today.
The center currently has 8 professors, 4 associate professors, 3 researchers, 7 postdocs, and 26 PhD candidates from 12 different nations working.

Duties of the position
The PhD candidate will develop advanced theoretical methods related to none quilibrium quantum transport and many-body properties of novel low-dimensional quantum materials.
Required selection criteria
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in physics or Nanotechnology, or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.
Preferred selection criteria
- A solid background in quantum transport, quantum field theory, many-body theory, and/or topological phases of matter is required.
- Experience with numerical calculations is an advantage.
- The successful candidate should be creative, independent, and have a strong ability to work problem oriented.

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is three years with the possibility of up to one-year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department.
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in [subject area] (Link to website, if applicable) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
The position is external EEA funding.
