Three-year Fixed Term appointment with the possibility of extension. A loan or secondment will also be considered. Full or part time candidates (minimum of four days) will be considered.

Location: Candidates could be based at a number of our hubs in London, Croydon, Sheffield and Birmingham, with regular London, national and possibly international travel as required.

The Home Office is responsible for keeping Britain’s streets safe and its borders secure and for leading on key issues at the heart of the Government’s agenda including; immigration and passports, drugs policy, crime policy, counter-extremism and counter-terrorism as well as ensuring visible, responsive and accountable policing in the UK. The challenges the Department faces are significant and can change rapidly in the global environment in which we operate making the Home Office one of the most stimulating departments to work in.

The Covid-19 crisis has highlighted the importance of scientific advice to our work. As we try to manage the repercussions, this advice will continue to be crucial to how we operate in the future. You will be joining the Home Office at a pivotal movement in the Department’s history as it sets out to deliver an ambitious transformation agenda, establishing new ways of working to tackle the challenges of the future.

The Home Office is seeking an exceptional Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) to lead on the use of scientific advice to help shape the Home Office’s strategy and inform policy making and operational decisions. To reflect the changing prioritises of the Department, the next CSA will also act as Director General (DG) for Science, Technology, Analysis, Research and Strategy and have management responsibility for at least three directorates totalling about 700 people.

The appointed candidate will advise on emerging research and innovation and support horizon scanning, bringing together insights from across scientific disciplines to advise the Home Office on strategic opportunities and risks. They will be a critical member of the Home Office and its governing board, working to ensure science continues to drive and underpin the Department’s work.  

The individual will take on a significant leadership and transformation challenge ensuring that the Department has access to the evidence it needs and thinks strategically about its future, working closely with the Permanent Secretary, the Home Secretary and Ministerial team. 

They will be a highly credible scientist of international renown in a relevant discipline, from academia, industry or other research environment. You will need to be able to synthesise information so that it is useful for policy and operational decision makers, have scientific credibility with the external and internal scientific communities and a strong network of scientific colleagues. You will be an experienced leader, bringing both your own expertise, but also the proven ability to harness the expertise of others. Extensive senior leadership experience with evidence of developing a compelling organisational vision and providing direction for large; disparate teams is essential. Candidates will have the personal resilience to adapt and operate in an ambiguous, fast-changing and complex environment which is subject to regular scrutiny by the media, public and others.
