Research Assistant 1 HSS
The incumbent will be the Research Assistant for multiple quantitative data projects being conducted, the majority of which be conducted on the headache cohort, which was created by the Headache Centers of Excellence Research & Evaluation Center (REC). Requiring limited supervision and exercising sound independent judgment and initiative, the prospective candidate will provide a high level of assistance to the Associate Director of the HCoE REC in coordinating the data output from the REC biostatisticians, synthesizing findings through tables and graphics, reporting and as well as administrative aspects of studies and the program. Specific duties entail:
The incumbent is independently involved in tracking all aspects of report and manuscript preparation related to the headache cohort and the Women Veterans Cohort Study, including approved project specifications, variable creation/modification in the data dictionary, analytic plans, preliminary descriptions of the headache cohort, identification of subgroups of interest, write-ups of preliminary results.
Keeping track of biostatistician tasks and outputs in order to keep the group efficient and on-task.
Is responsible for scheduling activities such as meetings of the analysis staff as well as larger writing teams and deadlines for the review of manuscript drafts.
Is responsible for maintaining files for each project or manuscript including Endnote file of literature referred to in the manuscript, tabled results and feedback from co-authors as well as outside advisors.
The incumbent supports the designated lead on the human research protocol for the cohort for the VA. Includes but not limited to initial approvals, amendments, and re-approvals.
Is responsible for assisting in the creation and maintenance of all administrative files related to the IRB.
Is responsible for coordination of requests for data access (IRB additions and deletions, DART requests). The incumbent will collect, organize, and review all data access requests to ensure their appropriateness, completeness and accuracy.
Will share responsibility for running analyses (SAS or Excel) on self-report instruments used in HCoE headache studies and internal provider lecture series.
- Researches and collects data through site or home visit intakes; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments.
- Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports.
- Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities.
- Recruits study participants and ensures that subject recruitment and follow-up are completed per protocol procedures.
- Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May assist research and support staff.
- Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.
Required Education and Experience
Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Proven ability and knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Proven proficiency with computers, including Excel, databases (including SAS), and automated systems to accomplish work. Proven ability to analyze data from self-report measures for HCoE headache studies and the internal lecture series (post-tests, lecture evaluation).
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively both in verbal and written format.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Proven ability with the uses of database management systems and software to control the organization, storage, retrieval, security, and integrity of data.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Must have demonstrated and verifiable excellent punctuality and attendance.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Bachelors in Psychology, Public Health or Science/Social Science. Experience in research settings, assisting with tabling results, and writing of literature summaries and other key sections of scientific peer-reviewed papers. Familiar with statistical analysis using software such as SAS, R, etc. and ability to analyze data other than EMR data, read output and summarize findings.
