About the position
The Department of Electric Power Engineering has a vacancy for a 100% position as researcher within the field of Digital Electrical Energy.
The researcher position is connected to and financed (75%) by the Centre for Intelligent Electricity Distribution (CINELDI), which is a Centre for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME) funded by the Research Council of Norway. The Department of Electric Power Engineering funds 25% of the position, connected to the continued operation and project management of The National Smart Grid Laboratory, which is national infrastructure built up under funding from The Research Council. The two projects are intertwined.
The field of Digital Electrical Energy is a strategic focal area both for the Department, and for the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, of which the Department is a part.
The researcher will primarily serve the mentioned projects which are cross-cutting among the 5 research groups at the Department. The research groups are described here: https://www.ntnu.edu/iel/research/.

Duties of the position
The Department is a major research partner in the FME CINELDI and has a responsibility to facilitate for the research of the PhDs and Postdocs associated with this project and to contribute to its long-term goals. To fulfil this obligation, it is furthermore necessary to provide a continuous senior research capacity as well as high-level competences to further develop the National Smart Grid Laboratory to keep it at high international standard.
Major responsibilities of this position will be to:
- Facilitate for extended use and development of the National Smart Grid Laboratory. This includes to develop and organize training/tutorial sessions for new users and to develop a strategic plan for the infrastructure in terms of new investments and application areas, as well as to report annually about its use to the Research Council of Norway.
- Contribute to the development of a research team within FME CINELDI with outstanding competence within planning and operation of low-inertia power systems.
- Contribute to innovation and entrepreneurial activities together with the research partners in FME CINELDI.
- Take initiatives for new research projects, in particular joint international proposals to secure funding from the Research Council of Norway and/or other international granting institutions.
The researcher will be a full member of the scientific staff at the Department of Electric Power Engineering, and will take part in activities beside research, such as teaching and relevant administrative tasks, approximately 20% over time.
Required selection criteria
The qualification requirement is a PhD in Electrical Engineering, with a specialization suitable for the job description. Relevant specialization in power electronics and/or power system operation and control is therefore desirable. This position will require a comprehensive theoretical knowledge in modelling aspects of modern power systems as well as prototyping experience for practical implementations.
Strong competence in one or several of the following areas is highly advantageous.
- Modelling and analysis of power systems with high penetration of power electronics.
- The transfer of models into a controlled laboratory environment, where techniques such as real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop are used for testing before pilot installations and full-scale deployment.
- Design, operation or practical use of power system laboratories.
- Sensor technology, communication and instrumentation for power system monitoring and control.
Continued research experience beyond the PhD, such as postdoctoral work, is an advantage. The candidate must have proven skills in publishing research articles in international journals of high standard and should master both practical and theoretical aspects of the field. We seek a person who can work independently and take own initiatives, and at the same time has good collaborative skills.
Very good written and oral English language skills and the ability to communicate fluently, is essential. This will be assessed during the selection process, i.e. through interview and trial lecture, and through the quality of language in the application and the submitted papers.
Proficiency in a Scandinavian language will be rated positively. New members of the academic staff who do not master a Scandinavian language are expected to achieve proficiency in Norwegian within three years of employment. This proficiency should correspond to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at NTNU.

Salary and conditions
The salary for the position of researcher code 1109 is normally remunerated from NOK 523000 - 680000 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
The Department of Electric Power Engineering works closely with key players in the Norwegian electricity supply sector, who manage critical infrastructure. A comprehensive risk assessment of the candidates' research interests and potential activities related to national threat assessments will therefore also form basis for the final selection of candidates.
