This Research Specialist will conduct and support research in the Bugaj Lab in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania, using standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, Gibson assembly, restriction digestion), bacterial cloning, DNA construct design, mammalian cell culture, confocal microscopy, and automated image analysis.
This Research Specialist will conduct and support research in the Bugaj Lab in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania, using standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, Gibson assembly, restriction digestion), bacterial cloning, DNA construct design, mammalian cell culture, confocal microscopy, and automated image analysis. Assist with standard lab tasks, including ordering, receiving, and maintaining inventory of lab supplies, preparing media and bacterial culture plates, cleaning/sterilizing glassware, and eventually training and overseeing a team to perform these support activities, as needed.
Specific areas of responsibility:
- Molecular Biology – PCR, DNA electrophoresis, DNA purification, molecular cloning
- Tissue Culture – sterile culture of mammalian cell lines, viral production, transgene expression and analysis
- Live cell and fixed cell fluorescence microscopy on widefield and confocal microscopes
- Automated image analysis in Cell Profiler and R
- Data Analysis in R
- Presenting data at regular lab meetings and weekly meetings with advisor
- Ordering supplies, receiving orders, performing inventories on lab supplies; washing and autoclaving glassware.
Bachelor's degree in bioengineering or life sciences and a minimum of two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in synthetic biology research, and demonstrated experience in R or similar programming language. Masters degree preferred.
