About the opportunity 

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers one of the most comprehensive and diverse ranges of humanities and social science studies in the Asia-Pacific region and is regularly ranked in the top 20 faculties of its kind. Combining scholarly knowledge, industry experience and technical expertise, the Department of Media and Communications in the School of Literature, Art, and Media is at the forefront of media and communications research and teaching.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding senior academic at the level of Professor or Associate Professor in Media and Communications (Journalism Specialisation) to join our rapidly growing and highly successful department. The successful candidate will possess a strong track record of critical, reflexive research and be able to articulate strong intellectual and pedagogical visions for the interdisciplinary fields of international journalism, public relations, and/or strategic communication.

The successful candidate will be an eminent scholar capable of providing a high level of disciplinary and organisational leadership, evidenced in strong track records of mentoring and developing research teams and facilitating impactful collaborations with national and international partners.

Drawing on their previous experience in managing large research projects and/or teaching departments, the successful candidate will be required to drive strategic planning to deliver innovative teaching and research programs that promote strategic, creative, organisational, and intercultural communication and media practices in the context of dynamic online media environments.

Key to the role is experience in cultivating a positive workplace culture and building the capability of individual staff to strengthen their academic performance and improve learning outcomes for students. The appointee will be required to make a strong contribution to the mentoring and support of early and mid-career researchers to ensure academic success.

The position will lead our strategic agenda to position the University of Sydney as a leader in media and communications teaching and research in the Asia-Pacific region. Accordingly, the right candidate will have attained strong national and/or international recognition in their area of specialisation and high rates of success in attaining competitive research grants. They will attract and supervise outstanding higher degree candidates, and generate high levels of research income from both traditional (e.g. Australian Research Council) and more innovative sources of funding.

Evidence of sustained relationships with industry, business, community, government agencies and professional bodies, coupled with vision for the future needs and development of their relevant field within Australia and internationally, is expected of the successful candidate.

Term and remuneration

The position is offered on a continuing basis, subject to completion of a satisfactory probation and confirmation period for new appointees. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
