About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health is the largest faculty in the University, and the Sydney Medical School is one of seven schools within the faculty. The school is one of the highest rated education and research institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, working to improve human health and welfare through education, research and the provision of healthcare. The school is dedicated to developing caring, clinically outstanding, research-capable and globally aware graduates who have the capabilities to become leaders in medicine, public health and research.
We are seeking to appoint a distinguished academic as Head of School and Dean who will join the leadership team of the Faculty of Medicine Health. The school organises its teaching and research around seven metropolitan clinical schools and three rural clinical schools, which have an extensive research program ranging from the molecular basis of disease to clinical medicine. Research is focused on six major themes – cancer; infectious diseases and immunology; neurosciences and mental health; obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease; healthy ageing; and reproductive, maternal and child health.
The successful applicant will be responsible for the school’s academic education and research performance outcomes that support the overall faculty strategic goals, maintaining accreditation standards (where appropriate), the student experience, managing the school’s financial sustainability, meeting financial targets and the workplace culture. The position has formal financial and people delegations and is responsible for effective decision making to ensure financial sustainability. The successful applicant will contribute to the attraction, appointment, development and retention of talented staff who are able to attract and develop talented students. The successful applicant will also help to promote the school’s, the faculty’s and the University’s reputation for excellence and its national and international academic standing.
The successful applicant must hold medical qualification registrable with the Medical Board of Australia and have a wide network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders, that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the school, faculty and University.
Term and remuneration
The initial appointment will be for 5 years with the opportunity for renewal subject to assessment of performance.
The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package.
