Applications are invited for a joint appointment as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in African Studies in the Faculty of Arts (as tenure home) and the Faculty of Social Sciences (Ref.: 500234), to commence as soon as possible, but not later than January 1, 2021, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.

Founded in 2014, the African Studies Programme at the University of Hong Kong is an interdisciplinary area studies programme. It is a part of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, which houses all area studies research units.

The African Studies Programme is searching for an Africanist holding a Ph.D. degree from a major research university with a specialisation in either African Literature, History, Human Geography, Politics and Society, Linguistics or African Arts. Applicants should demonstrate the following: (1) a strong interdisciplinary vocation with in-depth experience of conducting field research in Africa; (2) a track record of high-impact publication; (3) evidence of an active and compelling research agenda; and (4) teaching experience on African affairs. Proficiency in a major African language and/or French or Portuguese, as well as evidence of securing competitive external research funding would be an advantage. The appointee will contribute to the undergraduate curriculum in African Studies, supervise research postgraduate projects, and play a central role in the University’s nascent China-Africa research cluster. She/He will be an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher and researcher who endeavours to attract student interest in African affairs and significantly advance the University’s research profile on Africa. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
