Role Description

We have an exciting opportunity for an individual who would like to be at the forefront of delivering world leading aerospace research.

As the UK’s only exclusively postgraduate university, Cranfield’s world-class expertise, large-scale facilities and unrivalled industry partnerships is creating leaders in technology and management globally.  Our distinctive expertise is in our deep understanding of technology and management and how these work together to benefit the world.

Our people are our most valuable resource and everyone has a role to play in shaping the future of our university, developing our learners, and transforming the businesses we work with. Learn more about Cranfield and our unique impact here. Our shared, stated values help to define who we are and underpin everything we do: Ambition; Impact; Respect; and Community. Find out more here.

Cranfield’s Aerospace theme is led by Professor Iain Gray, and represents one of the largest academic centres in Western Europe for strategic applied research, development and design within aerospace. This is represented by a number of advanced facilities, tools and expertise in the field, including capabilities unique to Cranfield, and several close commercial partnerships with companies, including Airbus, BAE Systems, Boeing and Rolls Royce. The aerospace theme at Cranfield has also seen significant University investment over recent years, including the building of a new Aerospace Integration Research Centre (AIRC) in 2017, with Airbus and Rolls-Royce as co-investment partners. For further information please visit our website: https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/themes/aerospace

As Research Fellow you will support the delivery of research on autonomous systems and more specifically on UAS operations. You will also provide support on related commercial consultancy, training and postgraduate supervision (PhD, MSc) activities within the Centre for Autonomous and Cyber-Physical Systems. You will be expected to work closely with all research teams within the Centre and the Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre. There is an increasing need to fly unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in the national airspace to perform various missions. Therefore, the focus of the research is on developing enabling technologies such as Detect and Avoid, Strategic and Tactical Conflict Resolution, Command and Control (C2) operational concepts and technologies in support of standards to enable the broad range of UAS.

As Research Fellow you will be involved in collaboration with academic and industrial partners. You will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with staff from all organisations across a wide range of disciplines to discuss research methodologies. The ability to communicate, rapidly assess information, resolve problems and respond in a timely manner is essential. A PhD (or close to completion) in aerospace or related engineering/science subject is also essential. You will have experience in aerospace systems, artificial intelligence and classical control and advanced control systems, together with a developing track record of publishing in high quality publications. Industrial experience would be an advantage.

In return, you will have exciting opportunities for career development in this key position, and you will support world leading research and education, joining a supportive team and environment.

At Cranfield we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential.  To further demonstrate our commitment to progressing gender diversity in STEM, we are members of WES & Working Families, and sponsors of International Women in Engineering Day.

Our equal opportunities and diversity monitoring has shown that that women and minority ethnic groups are currently underrepresented within the university and so we actively encourage applications from eligible candidates from these groups.

We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role.  To find out more, please visit https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/about/working-at-cranfield/diversity
