At Stanford University, we make accessibility a priority. The Stanford Online Accessibility Program (SOAP) seeks a Director who will expand on the successes of the current office with the aim of uplifting the culture of digital accessibility across the institution. This is a tremendous opportunity to grow the current team and elevate the program.

As the Director of SOAP, reporting into University IT, you will lead and design the launch of an expanded University-wide Digital Accessibility Program. In consultation with senior University leadership, you will,

  • Lead strategic planning and analysis of program and ongoing roadmap. Monitor trends in accessibility and evolve direction of the program.
  • Lead governance structures. Make accessibility and compliance a requirement for new and updated services with revision of current online accessibility policies and integration of those policies into all appropriate resources. Lead yearly policy review and action plans.
  • Develop accessibility shared accountability model across Stanford, working with the highest levels of leadership in the schools and departments to advance accessibility at the local level.
  • Represent the program at the University level, as well as internal and external stakeholders and constituencies.
  • In partnership with the Office of the General Counsel, act as the accessibility subject matter expert for the university regarding the interpretation, implementation and compliance with policies and regulations. Recommend actions and/or resolve complex issues that span organizational boundaries.
  • Monitor and report progress towards stated goals and compliance
  • Direct outreach, change management and training strategies
  • Direct alignment and support for procuring and negotiating accessible solutions and contracts across Stanford
  • Oversee accessibility team

Education & experience (required):

  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, skills and abilities (required):

  • Proven leadership skills and ability to influence and motivate constituencies which could span multiple organizational boundaries.
  • Advanced knowledge and application of accessibility best practices, per W3C WAI guidelines and specifications (WCAG, WI-ARIA etc.), Section 508 and other evolving accessibility standards.
  • Demonstrated excellent planning, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound business decisions using good business judgment and innovative and creative problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage financial, organizational and staff resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to cultivate professional and business partnerships.
  • Relevant subject matter expertise.

Physical requirements*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
