TOKAMAK PHYSICIST/DIAGNOSTIC EXPERTPlasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC), to carry out fundamental and applied research on the SPARC tokamak, a novel and powerful scientific instrument designed to be the world’s first fusion experiment to create and confine a plasma that makes net-energy. Construction of SPARC is expected to begin by June 2021. Will work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers. The initial focus will be on developing systems for making measurements of important plasma parameters. These “diagnostic” systems will be essential to answering critical scientific questions as SPARC enters the burning plasma regime. Will also be crucial to the successful operation of the experiment. When the SPARC experiment goes into operation, the focus of the position will shift toward scientific exploitation of the facility as a key member of a multi-institutional research team.

Responsibilities will include participation in tokamak research on the SPARC facility, including proposing and leading experiments; assuming a leadership role in defining requirements and developing the diagnostics suite for SPARC; the development of individual plasma diagnostic systems; analyzing experimental data and comparing the data with theory and models; and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals and making presentations at scientific conferences.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: Ph.D. in plasma physics or a closely related field; at least two years of experience in magnetic confinement research; broad knowledge of tokamak physics; direct experience with high-temperature plasma measurement systems; and broad knowledge of different diagnostic techniques used in plasma and fusion devices, including magnetics, thermocouples, interferometry, Thomson scattering, electron cyclotron emission, neutron counters, neutron spectroscopy, bolometry, spectroscopy, and reflectometry. Job #18671
