Research Associate 1, MS, Genetics
Carries out research assignments as part of a team of investigators in a multi-faceted research project requiring specialized experimental methods. Independently performs experiments and laboratory techniques. Trains incoming laboratory personnel (graduate students and postdoctoral associates) in complex experimental procedures and methods. Oversees daily lab operations related to the project. Conducts research requiring specialized techniques, including: the preparation of genetically modified human and non-human primate cell lines via genome editing; mouse colony management; breeding and tracking of genetically modified mice; collection and analysis of mouse embryonic tissues using molecular, immunohistochemical and related techniques; preparation of samples for analyses via chromatin immunoprecipitation, chromatin accessibility assays, and analysis of gene expression via bulk and single-cell RNA-sequencing; CRISPR screens in cell lines. Train incoming lab personnel in experimental methods developed in our laboratory. Analyzes and interprets scientific results. Presents reports of results at regular laboratory meetings.
- Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority.
- Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning
- Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly.
- Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports.
- Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning.
- Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory.
- Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Skilled with experiments in the preparation and analysis of genetically modified cell lines via genome editing.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Skilled with functional genomic techniques in cells and tissues.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Skilled in mouse genetics, breeding, maintenance, genotyping and tracking of mouse lines, and preparation and analysis of mouse embryonic tissues.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Ability to analyze and interpret scientific results and present at regular laboratory meetings.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Ability to train incoming lab personnel in experimental methods developed in laboratory.
