PhD, Machine Learning for Seabed Classification in SONAR
About the position
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to study the feasibility of extracting geological, chemical and/or biological information of the seabed from the signals received from an echo sounder.
Output: The expected outcome is a method and apparatus able to classify, in real time, the seabed directly below a ship using machine learning techniques. The method should be implementable into the on-board electronics in order to serve the extracted information to the final user. That information can be used to plan fishing operations, avoidance of dangerous or protected zones, and recognition of underwater landmarks.

Duties of the position
The feasibility of such system will be studied in a bottom – up approach, using training datasets that grow on complexity. We foresee three phases:
- Simulation phase: We will improve the current tools for simulation of SONAR propagation in heterogeneous media. Based on the knowledge gathered in a previous CIUS project, we aim to build a implementation that includes the physics of specular reflection, propagation through heterogeneous media (absorption, sound speed gradients), and multiple propagation. The resulting simulations will be used to create a training and validating datasets to feed a neural network.
- Field phase: A database will be built using real world data, acquired in locations with known habitats so that the acoustic cues can be easily annotated. Data could come from previous experimental campaigns, or from field tests specifically design for this purpose. The database will then be divided into training and test and fed into the neural network. The networks may be pre-trained in simulated and/or laboratory data.
This project should also consider if additional data can improve the classification results.
Required selection criteria
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in [subject area] or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.
- A master’s degree or equivalent education with emphasis on theory and methods from acoustics, (bio)physics, mathematics, signal processing, electronics, or computer science, with a weighted-average grade of B or higher, in accordance with NTNU’s grading system
- Good communication skills in both oral and written English
- Good analytical and programming skills
Preferred selection criteria
- Experience within the field of ultrasound in either medicine or industrial applications
- Experience with methods and / or theory for one of the specific projects listed
- Prior written, scientific output with relevance

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years.
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
