Stanford Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance Research Fellow Position
The Steyer-Taylor Center seeks to hire a research fellow, to begin in July 2020 for a 12-month term, to develop theories and translational models for investment portfolios in a changing climate. The ideal candidate has excellent academic credentials and experience in investment research, portfolio theory or asset management. Consistent with the mission of the Steyer-Taylor Center, we are seeking an individual who can identify and translate solutions into practice. The position is particularly well suited for a former investor or research analyst, or a post-doctoral economics or finance student with relevant work experience.

Investment Portfolios in a Changing Climate project
Driven by a growing awareness of the threats and opportunities inherent in a changing climate, asset owners are increasingly pledging to shift investment capital toward decarbonized and climate resilient strategies. While the pathway to net-zero and climate resilient portfolios is far from clear, more attention has been paid to sorting assets based on carbon intensity and physical climate risk. What is not yet well understood is how a changing climate, with its attendant physical and transition risks, impacts overall portfolio management and strategy. Do the tenants of modern portfolio theory apply in a changing climate? Do traditional formulas for calculating asset class allocations make sense in the context of systemic climate risk? What skills and expertise should asset owners be screening for when hiring investment managers? These are among the questions to be explored under the banner of the Investment Portfolios in a Changing Climate project. Led by Alicia Seiger, the project will engage a broad range of scholars and practitioners, including pension fund, endowment and family office investors to understand portfolio management in a changing climate.
The Research Fellow (RF) will conduct theoretical and empirical research and will be expected to produce publications for a practitioner audience. The RF will report to the Managing Director of STC, and work closely with the STC Faculty Director, STC fellows, Stanford faculty, and partners in the investment community on specific projects.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Design and carry out research on portfolio theory and management in a changing climate
- Write high-quality research papers and case studies
- Help design and organize market engagement activities including invitation-only zoomshops, guest speakers, and educational forums.
- Establish trust and credibility with investors and other key external stakeholders
- Graduate degree (PhD, JD and/or MBA) with a strong academic record
- Outstanding quantitative ability and writing / verbal skills
- A minimum of five years experience in an analytical role in energy, transportation, agriculture, sustainability or financial services
- Experience with portfolio management and / or factor-based investing
- Experience developing research products, preferably using quantitative methods, and presenting research in public settings
- Familiarity with climate science and impacts, the TCFD framework, carbon accounting and climate risk modeling
- Demonstrated interest in climate-related investment trends and specific knowledge about the dominant issues in the sector
