Ultrasonic doppler measurements while drilling for identification and quantification of influx/efflux in boreholes

About the position

Purpose: To prove the applicability and sensitivity of ultrasonic Doppler measurements if introduced in a borehole drilling assembly in typical wellbore environments and drilling context.

Output:

  1. A documented methodology study based on theoretical and experimental investigations, assessing the potential for downhole ultrasonic Doppler measurements in a drilling process.
  2. An assessment of the physical and technical limitations, operational restrictions and boundaries for ultrasonic Doppler measurements in a wellbore and drilling environment, including:
    1. Estimates of sensitivities (signal-to-noise ratios) in common operational settings.
    2. Development of signal processing methods.
    3. Understanding upper/lower velocity range for wellbore influx/efflux for typical:
    4. Drilling / borehole parameters.
    5. Drilling mud rheological properties.
    6. Formation fluid properties.
  3. A recommended transducer design optimized for the purpose.

Project description:

Wellbore stability, including formation fracturing, fluid losses and/or wellbore influx during drilling is among the highest risk factors in the well construction process. Current methods for detecting fluid loss/gain situations during drilling is mainly by continuous surface monitoring of the fluid balance, the volumes flowing in and out of the well, however there is no direct measurement of where in the well the losses/gains occur, nor any information related to the geometry or area of the influx/efflux interval.

Supervisors:

Main supervisor: Svein-Erik Måsøy, Researcher, CIUS, NTNU.

Co-supervisors: Erlend Viggen, Post Doc, CIUS, NTNU. Lasse Løvstakken, Professor, NTNU. Tonni F. Johansen, Associate Professor, CIUS, NTNU. Hans Torp, Professor, NTNU. Bjarne Bøklepp, Advisor ResGeo & Petrophysics, Equinor.

Duties of the position

In case of gain/loss scenarios in a drilling operation, an early detection and the right counteractions are crucial to prevent escalation of the situation. An ultrasonic doppler measurement placed a few meters behind the drilling bit could hence be a game changing technology, by providing in real time during drilling:

  • An early detection and precise location of wellbore influx/efflux
  • A quantitative estimate of the influx/efflux area and the geometry of the “loss/gain system” as well as the velocity and direction of the fluids movement
  • Further, the effects of the mitigating actions initiated can be monitored in near real time

This PhD project aims at developing the methodology and confirming the viability, robustness and the restrictions of Doppler measurements in a typical drilling environment, and further to propose an ultrasonic transducer design optimized for use in wellbores/drilling operations.

This project will be developed in close collaboration with the CIUs partner Equinor.

The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in [subject area] or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

  • A master’s degree or equivalent education with emphasis on theory and methods from acoustics, (bio)physics, mathematics, signal processing, electronics, or computer science, with a weighted-average grade of B or higher, in accordance with NTNU’s grading system
  • Good communication skills in both oral and written English
  • Good analytical and programming skills

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience within the field of ultrasound in either medicine or industrial applications
  • Experience with methods and / or theory for one of the specific projects listed
  • Prior written, scientific output with relevance

CIUS aims to be a world-leading centre for research and innovation in next-generation ultrasound technologies. Candidates for this position will be selected in accordance with this aim. For some projects, it is imperative that the candidate has a proven ability to work in an experimental setting and is willing and interested in doing laboratory work.

Personal characteristics

  • Good communication abilities
  • Besides technical skills, we are looking for a curious, ambitious candidate who is highly self-motivated to do research and contribute to the innovative work carried out in CIUS

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability.

We offer

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
